Heated Leather Wheel - Any Way to Add After Delivery?

I feel like you would have to swap steering wheels at the very least. The heat coil component wouldn’t be put into every steering wheel. Swapping the steering wheel means messing with the air bag. Once you do have the steering wheel swapped then you would need to either put in your own switch or replace the dash portion where the original button goes, right next to heated seats. Lastly you would probably have to tell the computer that you have the option and activate it there as well.

So this is what I found so far searching for parts.

Heated leather steering wheel: $483

There are different part numbers between the heated leather and non-heated leather steering wheel. So not all leather steering wheels have the heating element.

It seems you can't just add the switch to the hvac control either. The whole panel needs changed out and it isn't cheap, at least right now.

There appears to only be two different wiring harnesses for the instrument panel/dash and that only depends on whether you have the single or dual zone AC. Meaning that if you have the Standard package you probably have to change out the harness. Why you would add a heated steering wheel if you don't have heated seats is beyond me anyways. Anyone with Mid package and up should have the wiring required to add the heated steering wheel.

With these two items you can add an OEM heated steering wheel, but it's $1100+ which is way too much. I could probably sell my leather steering wheel pretty easy to someone wanting to replace their crappy foam rubber base bronco one. But the AC controls might be a harder sell. I'll probably wait for prices to settle a bit or find some part outs from wrecked broncos.

You may also need to change some setting via Forscan but I wouldn't have any idea until I tried.

Having done this on my LWN Colorado, there is a chance of different clocksprings as well as different wheels. On my year, the heat was a separate circuit not tied to the BCM, which vastly simplified things, making the heated wheel mod plug and play. If the heat is controlled through the BCM, FORSCAN will be involved, assuming those parameters are accessible.

There was a write up on how to do this on my Fusion. There was a missing cable needed, the heat module, plus the actual heated wheel and a few lines in forscan. I can't see this being much different.

Okay. That's a whole lot more stuff! How much did this whole setup run you for comparison?

Looks like it's the same kind of setup. Found the clockspring. And there are different part numbers depending on if it's a heated steering wheel or not, but also heated rear glass?

FWIW, mine came with the OEM heated steering wheel. The first few seconds when you turn it on it is ok, then after a minute or so, it goes to lukewarm at best. Then you almost forget it's on. It really isn't all that great. Now the seat heaters on the other hand, they will bake a potato!

I’m hoping once parts become more available to do this. Many over in the superduty platform have done the swap. For the superduty you needed a heating steering wheel module, power and ground to the heated wheel module, wiring from the module to the clockspring. And forscan programming. This was easier on the superduty as the heated wheel controls were on the touchscreen. I’m not saying you couldn’t run wiring to an upfitter or aftermarket switch.

The Bronco has been the only vehicle I’ve ordered that you can’t add heated steering as a stand alone option. Not ideal for the New England winters and $4,000 as a package doesn’t do it for me. Should be a $150-$350 option or included in mid package. (who wants heated seat but not heated steering?)

I expect forscan changed needed to enable so those are the mystery I think. (Forscan also can change the heated wheel temp setpoint)

we just need someone to go for it and lead the way.

For $30-$100 I’d give it a try. I had mine on the other night and could not feel any difference at all. The Bronco wheel just doesn’t have enough heat. Other Fords and other companies have been fine.

Doubt you'd need the control / steering wheel switch assm, it comes with the steering wheel assembly - says the parts catalog.

Betting you'd need a harness as well, but I haven't verified.
