I noticed a spray of white spots on the tread of our MY24 Everglades GY Territory MT spare tire some time ago (see attached picture) and didn't think much about it. Then our daughter purchased a MY25 Badlands that has the GY Territory MT tires (non-SAS 285s) and, yep, her spare has the same spray of white spots. On both Bronco spares the spots are in (about) three places around the spare tire tread. I've tried washing/rubbing the spots to clean them off to no avail (although I haven't really tried all that hard).

Does anyone know what these white spots are/were for? I've searched the forum and the web but haven't been able to find an answer. Also, if anyone has a suggestion on how to clean them off, please enlighten me.

Mount it and drive on it for a few miles and the spots will disappear.

They are part of the manufacturing process. Some brands use several colors. Either live with them like most people or be prepared to scrub the heck out of them to remove.

Use a black sharpie?
That will last till first tire rotation. Only you will notice it.

I thought that I would get an interesting mix of responses :like: so thanks to all. I suspected that it was to confirm that a tire has not been driven and it sounds like that's probably it. In any case, I change oil every 3K miles and do a five tire rotation every 6K so, about 1K miles from now, the spots will magically disappear.

It's text from an inkjet machine used to mark the tires during manufacturing. You can make out the last letter is a 'B' but it's hard to see the others due to the tread.
