You can also use a scribe or thin screwdriver to hold the nut centered and put a dab of super glue between the nut and sheet metal the nut sits in. It should hold it long enough for you to gently get the nut started. Don’t use too much superglue just enough to hold it.

SInce I live in a high-rise and don't have a private garage, I had to keep putting everything on / taking it off to prevent any thievery when I was taking breaks on how to attack this stupid thing.

SO yeah, my back feels like I took a 6 hour crossfit class picking up and taking off the tire 3x, unbolting everything to try to line it up...screwing with it for two hours, then bolting everything back up so I could take a break.

Ugh.

LOL ask me how I already know this..... What was a 150-20 minute job turned into a couple hours. And like you, was about to give in. I think if it weren't for being a friends vehicle, I would have. Felt like I just won some championship once completed.

Try a dab of plumbers putty to hold the nut in place after you line it up. Also I like the idea of creating a lead on the bolt to help guide it in. Be careful not to strip any threads. And as one guy already said have all of the other bolts in very loose to allow for some movement to get all remaining bolts in before you tighten any of them.

Anyone have a diagram of how the interior brackets / nuts look inside the tailgate? Can I access them from that narrow slot in the back above the bottom hinge?
