Can confirm Uwharrie is a blast. Small confession, I did Uwharrie in my JKU on 38s and was so impressed by the area trail and the parks folks were cool AF with tips and stuff like that. The only trail I couldn't do was Daniel bc someone had flipped on the big set of ledges.

Another fun one is Hurricane Creek Trail in ENC. It is primitive and remote, so go prepared to self rescue. That trail is my top pick around the eastern parts of NC and SC though!

Both are very worth the trip

Thanks for the photo location. I never made it up to the top of Thorn Creek Butte, but I spent a summer thinning timber in various parts of the Idaho City Ranger District. Steel Mountain is off to the east of Thorn Creek Butte in Google Earth. I recognized the silhouette in your photo. Thanks for bringing up some good memories!

Okay, learned something new today. I see that Phifer Creek Rd goes past that and that it's near Rocky Bar. Since it's going to be too hot this week to go out on my KTM, I think I'll need to explore that area in my Bronco.

I'm always learning new things about my state. Enjoy the area!

I never made it to Steel Mt., but I did go over the top of Trinity Mtn. to the southwest on a well-graded road. That's a great place to go on a hot day because it's pretty high up.

Nice rig and that looks like a blast! I absolutely loved Uwharrie last time I went back in November of 2023. Spent a long weekend enjoying some comfy below-freezing tent camping and I put tires on every trail except for the 3 “Dirty D’s.” Looking forward to getting back there sometime soon and taking on Dickey Bell and Dutch John. I like my fenders and quarters too much to attempt Daniel.

I used to do Uwharrie in 08/09 in a locked Vehicross on 33's. Everything I have head since then says the trails have become more rutted, washed out, and more difficult.

I dont think the clay mud ever cleaned off the frame on that vehicle.

Yeah HC is not open, strong chance it might not ever be open.
Its had a contentious history in the past several years with landowners and quarrels with traffic.
I've never experienced anything but a great run every time I've gone, but apparently sometimes it was an issue.
Plus it got wrecked in Helene.
Brown Mtn. is another good WNC option, doing a few guided runs there at the end of Sept.

Uwharrie is my "stompin' ground" where I've lead many groups and love it so much.
It does vary wildly from season to season (and during the season) on how worn areas get.
The "beginner" loop I always took folks on who didn't want a lot of potential dragging or technical stuff was Wolf Den-Lakeview-Falls Dam. Then proceeding on to Rocky Mtn. Loop for those who wanted some challenge, then the back side of Daniel (not the front) and Dutch John.
For those who wanted some real test and fun, we would do Dickey Bell. I do not take groups up the front of Daniel, just not comfortable with the potential for damage it has.
I like for folks to have a good time and want to return or continue to get off pavement somewhere.
