I am planning on going after market for wheels and 33’s. I thought of selling my take offs, but thought perhaps I could just have studs added and use them as winter tires. Anyone else thinking the same?

Good idea! I will probably buy aftermarket steelies and put narrow, studded snow tires from November to April.

Can you still get tires studded? Last time I had studded tires was on a 61 Chrysler wagon and bought them at Western Auto.

What is this "snow" you speak of? Really don't miss the winters from when I lived up north.

Yup. My last set was not studded and I prefer non studded. But it make more financial sense to stud these and keep them. And while we don’t get much snow where I live, I do go skiing on Mt Hood. And when the Portland area does get some snow, we are paralyzed

We don’t really get much in the Portland area. Mainly for going up in the Cascades.

Sure thing. You have your choice between stud-less, studded, and studdable snow tires.

Per a study by Washington State Department of Transportation, studded tires offer only a marginal increase in traction, and only in very limited circumstances. "Winter" studdless tires offer better traction in snowy conditions, more often than studded tires.

T'were me, I'd wear out the A/T tires or buy a second set of severe snow service (snowflake in the mountain)/dedicated winter tires. You'll almost certainly be safer than running studded tires.

Tires have only gotten better since this study was completed.

I’m sure. I’m just trying to go the cheap route.

Keep in mind that most shops won't a) stud a tire that isn't explicitly studdable and b) won't stud a tire that has been used at all.

Snow is not the biggest problem, it's the black ice that studs come in handy

Understood. General Grabbers appear to be such

Studded tires are not legal in some states and are restricted in others.

Yup. Not WA or OR so I’m not worried about it. YMMV.

This is an Interesting conversation. I'm a south Texas boy, I like the heat. I have never heard having two sets tires for summer and winter. Is that a common thing every household does?
