I just switched to 35" tires, and putting the 88 pound spare on without nicking the wheel or dinging the threads on the studs was not very easy. So, I fabricated a bushing that is an easy slip fit on the carrier and in the wheel bore. Now I can get the spare up on the spindle, line up the mounting studs, and easily slide it onto the studs.
I hacked up a 2" PVC fitting, but the bushing could more easily be made of wood or something else.
It may be that I am just getting old/ weak/lazy, but I think is works slick.
