Rear riding progressively rougher

Howdy, friends. It has been feeling for a couple months or so that the ride has been a bit rougher. Now at first, I just ignored that of course. Maybe the road or my mind playing tricks on me. I do think, though, that it has gotten worse. I'm thinking maybe it's an alignment issue, but I'm not sure how to confirm that for rear alignment. Just feels like a higher than normal amount of rough movement coming from the rear wheels. Another possibility on my mind is that my laziness with changing out the diff fluid after putting the bronco through a lot of water crossings has finally bit me. I'm hoping that isn't the case, though, since I don't hear any metal-on-metal grinding.

In any case, I'm sharing just to bounce ideas and see if anything sticks. I'm due to get the front drive shaft replaced this month (as part of a recall service bulletin), so I'm leaning towards asking the service folks to swap the various fluids for me regardless of the rough riding issue. That and I need to stop being lazy about extending the breather lines.

Alright lemme know if you have thoughts on likely sources of the extra bumpiness and diagnosis checks. I ought to get the equipment to change my own diff fluid, but that'll be new to me. I'm a scrub.

Water in your differential will not impact the ride “bumpiness” unless it locks up.

Try reducing the air pressure in you tires, that will soften the ride.

Honestly it sounds like you may be just a bit hyper vigilant because you're worried about the water crossing.

A few things I would do:

Check your tire pressure. Could be that your tires are a bit over inflated causing a bit of a rougher ride.

Jack up the rear end a couple of different ways and make sure everything is moving smoothly. Start on one side, jack under the rear end so that side goes up as high as you can, then move to the other side.
