Hi All, I was rear ended this week by an SUV traveling about 30mph. The impact was to the spare wheel on the tailgate, which appears to be the primary impact zone. It’s going in for the body work on Monday. All signs seem to indicate it’s a tailgate and related parts issue.

Anyone have experience on other things I should push them to look for? Anything mechanical, suspension, other…

these are pretty common so I figure someone else would have been through it.

thanks!

Glad you're OK. Take a look for damage to the hinges and pillar that they attach to. Also check the latch pin area for deformation.

Any damage to the bumper? Any pics?

Probably ok so long as it didn't bend the frame in where the rear bumper sits - a few pics of that occurring around here on rear-enders. It can be fixed, but the cost goes up significantly.

Was going to suggest checking frame but someone beat me to it.

There was a post not long ago from someone with a hitch where the frame had damage from the impact.

Also, check the alignment. When the XK8 was rear-ended by a firetruck, I was less than a week removed from alignment. The impact made a decisive difference. And, since I had the paperwork from days earlier, it was factored in when discussing damages with the County's carrier...

Be sure to have the cargo floor/pan checked out too. Mine had some slight bending after getting rear ended at ~20-25 mph. Also make sure they check your recovery points. Mine were fine, but slightly scuffed up.

Mine was similar except the guy who hit me kept insisting it was “just a little tap” while my SUV ended up with suspension and frame issues underneath 😂 Few days later my shoulder and lower back started locking up bad enough that driving became miserable.

Then came the endless adjuster calls, repair arguments and random paperwork requests every damn week. After a while I realized I was spending more energy managing the accident than recovering from it, so I had SAM LAW OFFICE step in on my case too. Whole thing finally started moving normally after that instead of feeling stuck forever.
