After installing some sound mat in the back of my Bronco, I stupidly lost the cargo anchors, plastic AND the two bolts that hold them in.

Plastic for Cargo Hooks: $13
Cargo Hooks, each: $54
Each bolt that holds in the cargo hook (8 needed): $127 EACH!!!!!

Crazy, crazy, crazy. Long story short--I found my hardware bag and don't need to mortgage my children for the replacement parts...

~Most~ bolts and fasteners in the Bronco can safely be substituted with generic stuff from the local hardware store.

I don't recall what the tiedown bolts were specifically if they can or not - they may have flat heads or something unique, but I bet you could find something from McMaster or another place if push came to shove, for a lot less than $127/ea.

The parts desk guy apologized profusely and checked the price more than once. BTW, I have the correct bolts in stock in my garage…that’s not the point.

Ford needs to fix this crap gouging policy.

Second example—I got pricing for the long white plastic interior panel fasteners…94 cents. Based on that I bought five of the orange fasteners as well…$4+ each. They seem to be surge pricing their parts based on scarcity.

This is not a good look.

It's more or less normal on small parts. Minimum purchase quantities (say 2 or 4 bolts instead of 1). $8 for a plastic clip, $30 for a bolt, etc. I certainly don't mind the dealer making a profit margin on parts, they are a business, but many of these prices are insanity. I do think this price you quoted is a mistake though...

Pro tip: Ford OEM structural bolts that are a light, dull silvery color are extremely corrosion protected via a Zinc-Aluminum coating known by the trade name of Dacromet, also called Zinc Flake. It is a really amazing coating offering tons of benefits including, amazing corrosion prevention (including salt), thin&uniform, heat resistant, environmentally friendly, no embrittlement from high temperature application, etc.

Although you can't find the nice custom Ford OEM bolts with captive Zinc Flake washers, McMaster Carr, does have a nice selection of these, in metric, both Medium and High strength (class 8.8 and 10.9), from 6mm to 12 mm diameter.

https://www.mcmaster.com/products/s...nc-flake-coated/system-of-measurement~metric/

The only drawback is they are sold in minimum quantities between 1 - 50 and range in price from about $10 for 50 pieces to $3 for 1 piece. Regardless, even when you have to buy 50 of them, they will likely be cheaper than your Dealer.

IMHO, this deserves its own post, so I am going to do that.

I used to build my own cars. I have a ridiculous amount of 10.9 rated hex flange bolts in all sizes, thread pitches and lengths. The Ford bolts are nice, hex with captured washers which is a nice touch. Not $127 nice. It's not the product, it's the pricing policy. Whether it's my local dealer or Ford itself, they need to amend their algorithm.

… like ALL OEM’s they build and sell whole vehicles. They’re not a hardware store. ;^)

The vast majority of people don’t take their vehicles a part.

Discovered similar insane pricing on a wiring connector for the rear BLIS sensor (the wiring chafes on the bumper - several threads on the issue).

The list price for this is $181.27! It can be had for around $100, but still…

Reminds me of a month or so ago when Ford wanted to charge me about $10 for each of those plastic retainer/screws that hold the trim pieces around the rear-door. I had stripped two of them.

I said "no thanks" to the dealer and went and bought 50 online at Amazon for $10... you never know when you might strip another of those screws/bolts/retainers. They worked perfectly.

I think the Ford parts formula is (take wholesale price) * 20 = parts price.
