There's not enough amperage in those small cig style plugs for a good compressor.

The best compressors that are portable come as a kit, usually in a bag or a suitcase, and have alligator clamps that go on the battery terminal.

For the price, the ViAIR are great. Inexpensive and will get the job done. I've had mine going on 18 years now (although I don't use it anymore since I rock an ARB).

The ARB are also offered in a portable kit as well but cost more money. BUT you get what you pay for.

This is the compressor I have. You can't air everybody on the trail up with you, just your truck, as it's not designed for long term use. It does not have a pressure switch either which means that as you air up and go tire to tire you need to turn the compressor OFF so you don't overload it. That's not exactly convenient since the on/off button is ON the compressor. So what I did on mine was I zip tied my air chuck OPEN so that way i'm NEVER building up pressure. I was trying to save as much as possible when I bought it.

This is basically the same as the 400P above but it has a built in pressure switch. So it'll turn itself off as you go from tire to tire and it builds up pressure. Much more convenient.

The 400P above are called 33% duty cycles. That means they can run about 20 minutes non-stop (most 100% duty cycle compressors are tested for 1 hour, so 33% gives you 20 minutes of use before they should cool down).

Going to a 100% duty cycle puts us in the next ViAIR

This is a 100% duty cycle so it'll go for about an hour without issues or needing a break. It's a bit bigger so does larger tires, which means it's a bit faster then the ones above.

One of the most popular portable compressors as you get a nice carrying case. It's also an ARB compressor, so they are designed to take a lot of abuse. You can do a 35" tire from 18PSI to 35PSI in 3 minutes.

The Cadillac of compressors, in a portable setup. This also includes an air tank so you can run smaller air tools. It'll do a 35" tire in 1 minute now.

So those are the portables we recommend.

I don't recommend the harbor freight specials or any other cheap compressor, as they are not going to last you years and years. ViAIR and ARB are designed to last you years and years I mean as I said, I still have my same ViAIR 400P that works great.

The smaller the compressor, the less power it has and the longer it'll take. Any 12V cig plug compressor will have REALLY long wait times as you air up because they just can't deliver the power you need. 12v cig plugs are not rated for much amperage.
