As much as I would have loved the Warthog name, the marketers at Ford made a the better call. They're not just selling to gearheads who obsess over every Bronco model. They're after everyone, including those who aren't Ford experts. Raptor has become brand wide performance designation, just like TRD Pro, M, AMG etc. The Raptor name is so well-known that even if you only vaguely know about the F-150 Raptor, you'll have a pretty good idea of what a ______ Raptor is without knowing the specifics. Using Raptor speaks to a wide audience, which is the move in the world of marketing.

This is coming from someone who would replace the raptor label with "WARTHOG" and the Bucking bronco with pig, if I had a Braptor.

Ok, I'm not getting into the 2dr/4dr, manual/automatic debate except that I'm ok with a 4 Dr Bronco if it's a manual transmission. Nonetheless, Broncos are purpose built machines....to get you home when you have to cross flooded creeks and rivers as tornadoes touch the ground (welcome to Texas), but despite being built on the Ranger frame (which are almost as big as 90s F-150s), they can't tow as much. Purpose built. Thus they deserve a better name than Braptor, which is lazy! They're separate animals. Whoever first called them Warthogs, please come forward to receive the credit you are due. These Broncos are better 4x4s than the military humvees of my era, so I've no problem with warthog transferring.

I agree. Whether you think of Pumba or the A10, Warthog would have been an awesome name.

Ford, listen up and remember the massive I sent yall about listening to these folks that daily subject their Broncos to real world tests. My BB only has to address flood, drought, flood...tri-polar much like the women I'm attracted to. We haven't had ice and snow in Texas south of Goldwaithe since then.

This package from Ford reads “WARTHOG BEAUTY RING KIT”.

I am convinced WARTHOG was going to be the official name for Bronco Raptor.
Too many documents, labels, and packages that reference WARTHOG for it to have simply been a code name.
Ford themselves even filed a patent for WARTHOG prior to the release.

When people hear RAPTOR, they immediately think of the F-150 truck, not Bronco.
Case in point, if this package read, “RAPTOR BEAUTY RING KIT” you would have no idea which Raptor vehicle it is for (F-150? Ranger? or Bronco?)

The Warthog name suits the Bronco so much better than Raptor.
Ranger Raptor is ok since it is a truck, but Bronco Raptor should have been called WARTHOG.

A missed opportunity on Ford’s part.
Have you seen a warthog? One of the ugliest animals ever. Even the name--wart plus hog--ugly. If Ford wasn't going to use a horse name, then Raptor made the most sense. All the good horse names were taken. What else is there beside Mustang and Bronco? Steed? Ford is developing the Raptor into its own "brand". It makes more sense to have everything Raptor instead of everything different or some things Raptor and other things something else. When you hear Raptor, you know what that is. You don't have to be trained that all these other names are "like the Raptor." Must because Raptor was F150-exclusive for a while doesn't mean it had to be that way. </end free marketing lesson>

Also, manufacturers use code names for products all of the time. It may be that Ford never intended to use Warthog. Or may they did for a while, heard the negative feedback, started to think of alternatives, realized there were no good horse names, and finally someone said, "Why not Raptor?"🙂

No doubt the same marketing geniuses who decided to water down the Mustang name with the Mach-E, and the same marketing geniuses who decided to water down the Bronco name with the Bronco Sport.

Herb
Actually, they are geniuses. Because they created name association and drew new eyes to the products. Yes, die hard fans gripe, but that doesn't stop them from buying regular Mustangs or Broncos. I've said before: anyone who decides not to buy a Bronco because there is a Bronco Sport was never going to be a Bronco customer. So the end result is people who want Broncos still buy them and some people who aren't Bronco types but like the lifestyle image can buy the Sport. Same with Mustang/Mach E. I guarantee a ton of people checked out and purchased the Mach E based on the Mustang name. People that would. It have done so if it was named Model E.

Even the civilians associate Warthog with a tank killing machine from an era when America's military was trained to fight rather than the lump of emotional mush it's become. Warthog is a positive thing to those who remember.

Stallion, Thoroughbred...... With the 4-banger, you could go with Gelding, or the 2-door could've been called the Miniature.... the braptor could've been the Clydesdale.

I'm aware of the A-10 and it still doesn't come to mind when I hear Warthog. When the name came up the first time around here, it was not well received other than by a small minority.

"Miniature" for the 2dr? Hell no! "Buck", "Bull", even "Clydesdale" in a bind for lack of creativity, but miniature....no sir!

Perhaps you're up north brother. There are quite a large number of us in the south who've heard shots fired while in uniform and associate 'Warthog' with duty and (coming from an infantry perspective) something we're glad is on our side.

To keep it simple to understand, an A-10 Warthog brings enough firepower to keep folks on the ground alive. That's your southern translation.
