Need help on understanding Ford extended warranty.

I am wanting to buy the 10 year/100,000 mile Ford extended warranty. I am confused about how it works. I have messaged 3 of the main Ford dealerships that sell them online, and have gotten pretty much 2 different answers.

Flood Ford said that the warranty starts after the 3 year/36,000 mile factory warranty has expired.

Here is what Zeigler Ford said today:

"Tony,
Thanks for the email. Coverage starts at 0 miles and on the vehicle's original In-Service Date. We are available tomorrow at 12:30 pm EST at 269.685.3557 if you have any questions."

Here is what Granger Ford said:
"Hello,
The plan will be active once you purchase it but the plan you purchase will not take effect until the bumper-to- bumper warranty is up.

Thank you."

This one sounds like it won't start counting until the factory warranty is over. What is the correct answer to this? I want to buy one before they go up, but I do not want to lose 3 years on it. Thanks for any help.

My Bronco has 245 miles on it.

Q: When does coverage begin on New Ford Protect Extended Service Plans?

A: Coverage begins at the warranty start date and zero miles and expires at the earlier of the number of months purchased or the number of miles purchased.

They all start counting at 0 miles and original in-service date. In other words, you have bumper to bumper for 3 years, 36k miles; your 10/100K warranty terms begin at 36001 miles/36 months and 1 day, but the time and miles start counting at 0 miles and in-service date.

It is NOT that you get an additional 10 years/100K miles *after* the 3/36 bumper to bumper.

And like I said, your extended warranty has its own terms independent of the bumper to bumper 3/36. Do NOT ass-u-me that whatever is covered in the 3/36 is automagically covered with extended warranty. Read your terms.

I know that the extended is not a true bumper to bumper warranty, but it covers a LOT of parts. So either way you lose 3 years/36,000 miles as it runs at the same time as your factory 3 years 36,000 mile warranty. In the end you only get 7 years/64,000 miles if you do the 10 year/100,000 extended? Thanks.

Extended warranties are pretty dishonest in the way they advertise them. They all start at the time a vehicle was put into service. A 10 year extended warranty is really only 7 years. A 5 year extended is only 2 years more than the bumper to bumper.

Nothing is lost, the ESP warranty is priced assuming the inherent factory warranty is in place for the initial period..

There’s nothing dishonest. The ESP builds upon the inherent factory warranty and is advertised as the total combined Ford warranty from the initial in-service date.

It’s Ford’s warranty, they choose to identify it as the total coverage period from day one. Some people have difficulty understanding that concept.

If someone purchases the 100k warranty their vehicle is covered for 100k miles...

Flood Ford and Grainger are some of the best in terms of price.

And If the ESP is canceled mid-term a prorated refund is issued. I was quickly issued a refund check when I traded my F150 Raptor for my TRX..

- sure, it’s a valid claim. It will take us 8-13 weeks to fix your Bronco, if we get parts in time. Also we think it’s unsafe so you have to leave it here. We are fresh out of loaners

- that isn’t a valid claim, you’ve obviously had this off road, or your aftermarket part has caused the issue, or you invalidated the warranty because you clearly touched it. That will be $289 diagnostic fee before we can let you leave

Then there is the classic
- surprise. That part isn’t covered by ESP. Bumper to bumper really means “bumper to bumper except whatever it is that just broke for you”

We'll take 3 months to 'fix' it but it still requires you to take it to an independent mechanic to fix what we 'fixed'. Oh, that'll be $2500 for your trouble.

That’s how they treat all repairs customer pay or warranty in the city I work in.

The only dealer near me that’s different with loaners/repairs is Toyota/lexus. I’ve seen them put people in loaners when it’s insurance pay and they don’t have rental on the insurance policy at all.

And that’s factual because I visit all brands and makes weekly on repairs. (I don’t have any knowledge of sales).

Some parts are seriously not available for months

I’ll add I bought both broncos based on price, not locally as the service is terrible. One two hours away the other 10

I also bought my warranty a cheap as possible

Hind site I should have more likely than not bought the warranty and broncos at the dealer 2 hours away as I believe should I need anything it may be the dealership to use


I know when you buy lawn equipment at the box store and need warranty the local dealer will do warranty work after they do all the local purchaser warranty work. Some won’t do box store purchased warranty OR REPAIR work at all. So the $$ you saved costs you in the end.

If there was a decent dealer service department near me, I would have bought the car locally,/ but the service department management /employees fluctuates a lot so that’s risky too.

Also. Around here many service advisors and dealers are in a bad position as they let the mechanic dictate hours he wants on a repair. I have seen
1) labor hours much higher than warranty hours, AND all data hours. Sometimes 2 times higher and that’s the ‘customer pay’ rates! Which is higher than warranty and also higher than insurance rates. I’ve seen a mechanic ask for 36 hours to replace an engine in several makes.
2) Parts are marked up sometimes 100% for customer pay jobs


I suggest finding someone you can trust and being aware unless you can fix it or ‘have a guy’ warranty or not you may be in a bad spot

Not entirely accurate either. I you purchase a 7 year 100k Extended warranty (which is only 4 years more than the warranty that comes with the vehicle) and at the end of 7 years you have 60k miles on the vehicle then you have lost 40k of the warranty. It was not covered for the full 100k.

As far as pro-rated refunds that also works in their favor . The 7 year extended ESP that I purchased from Grainger for my Ranger was canceled when I traded for the Bronco. Even though the factory 3yr was still in effect when I traded it still cost me several hundred $$ to have the ESP in effect for the 18 months I had it.
