I did my first (well third if you count floor mats and Rock Rails) on my Basesquatch 2 door 2.7. I am a fan of aftermarket good sounding exhaust systems- that have deeper, throatier and slightly louder sound than stock. I have been successful on most, not all of the quite a few installations I have done over many years on different vehicles. I am going into a fair amount of detail here to help anyone decide to do this system or not.
After much reading and reviewing many posts, listening to sound clips, etc. I decided to go with the MBRP dual exit CAT back aluminized system for my Bronco. I went with the aluminized as I live in FL- thankfully no road salt here. I thought long and hard about the Rousch axle back but removing the back bumper seemed like a lot of work just for an axle back. And the Roush was pricey. I ordered the MBRP on Black Friday, got a pretty good deal, I think. I have had good luck with MPRB, I have a dual exit system installed on my wife’s 2013 Silverado with 4.8 V8 for 7 years now and it’s awesome. But it’s a V8, not a V6. And it sounds real good- probably would no matter the exhaust system. With a 4 and 6 cylinder it is way more difficult to get good sound out of an exhaust system. I failed on a 2016 Camaro with a V6- went with MBRP BUT it was just an axle back and it did not have a flow through muffler- it was a resonator chamber on the side. Sounded terrible. I tried again with custom dual mufflers installed at an exhaust shop. Sounded terrible. So I was skeptical on any after market exhaust system for the Bronco given the V6 engine. It took my 2.5 years to pull the trigger on the MBRP. I think it is a newer system and has not been out that long but not sure.
Ok- installation was fairly easy. The fit, finish and quality of the exhaust system is excellent. It is fully bolt on, assembled super easy and included the nice round HD band clamps. It fit right in the factory stock exhaust hangers. It has a muffler included that goes further up in the system and it fit very nicely. (It was great to get the factory huge muffler tank out, LOL) I used basic ratchet and sockets- you will need deep well sockets. The system is a 3” and 2.5 inch after the split. The polished tips are 4” and I was able to adjust the tips so that they are the exactly the same on both sides- protrusion and distance from the bumper- I am a stickler on this. Some systems I have done in the past I have had trouble getting even. The same system fits 2.3 and 2.7. There is an extra exhaust hanger and spacer to install if you have the 2.3. For 2 door Broncos you have to cut the mid pipe shorter. I tried to use my tail pipe cutter, the pipe was too big- so I used a plain ole hack saw and took my time to get an even cut all the way around. I don’t have a lift either- I installed it in my home garage laying on the floor. I had only one issue of a rattle that I easily resolved. The hanger on the first pipe that bolts on where the factory system comes off goes completely through the factory rubber mount instead of fitting into it like the factory hanger. It then passes through a hole in the frame. When I wiggled the exhaust to test for rattles it was too close to the edge of the hole in the frame and rattled against it. So I simply took a heater hose the same ID has the hanger, slit it and installed it on the very end of the hanger where it goes through the hole in the frame. I secured it with a wire tie. It is far enough away from the pipe and insulated by the hose so it should not melt. Rattle gone. For others installing this system you could maybe just cut the hanger shorter so it does not go through the hole in the frame. I would have had to remove that pipe and was too far along to do so at that point. It took me about 3 to 3.5 hours to put the system on taking my time.
OK now for the sound…....simply put I love it. Start up, through all the gears and cruising RPM’s it’s perfect. Deep and throaty (for a V6), no rasp, no drone at all. It’s a little “loud” and so throaty at start up but “loud” and “throaty” are very subjective. It quiets down a little after initial start up. Sound clips are OK but don’t do justice in my opinion. You have to hear it from outside the vehicle and in the drivers seat. And drone is a problem with some systems. Not with this one. And yes it definitely has more punch- I noted it off the line immediately. I drive with a very light foot so now I just barely have to step on the gas and it takes off. I averaged 22.7 MPG before the system on regular gas. It will be interesting to see if mileage improves. The worst part is the smell of the system breaking in. So, all in all I would definitely recommend this system. I am thinking the K & N intake next and would love to do an E85 tune. I have two Racetrack gas stations 2 miles from my house that sell E85. But both can wait- I’ll just enjoy the sound of the MBRP for now.
