I have been going thorough this kennel thing since I bought my 2 door.
I use XL Ruffland Kennels. Two in the rear of my Expedition and One in the back seat of my Super Duty.

I was able to fold down the rear seats, add a 4-3/4 support to the rear floor and secure one Ruffland XL.

Problem is, I want to take both dogs.

Here is a mockup of the crate I am making to carry two plus off road gear.

That looks heavy! Will it protect your dogs like the Ruffland will in event of an accident? Would two large kennels( if large enough for your dogs) fit crosswise?

That is just the mockup. I made it to check fitment and how to carry gear. I had to make come changes because of the door strikers and I wanted it to have escape hatches at its rear if for any reason I could not open the back.
The actual crate will be 16 gauge aluminum and it will use the RuffLand doors. No rough edges and so forth. I hope I have thought of everything to keep them safe.

I can not say enough good things about the Ruffland crates. I own 6. one has a side door, and one has a front and rear door.
The one in this photo is an XL RuffLand. A perfect fit for one dog and gear.

Nice fit especially with the drawer set up.
The large will work with our two German Shepherds . I just like the extra stand up room for them in the XL, so they can balance better when we wheel.
Those crates from RuffLand are awesome. they have those hold down holes built in, and the ease of doors, options of doors.
My XL in the back seat area of my pickup is the one I have with front and rear doors. This way I can load or unload him from either side.
We use the RuffLand connectors to attach two, side by side in our expedition.
