I went with Monster Hooks Inc soft shackle loops.
Quality solid one piece product.

Just how smooth is the radius of the hole? It looks like there might be a step there.

Otherwise a fine bit of kit.

There is no rating on the factory recovery loops.
I kinda knew that would be the answer. But it points out with recovery stuff you don't always know all of the ratings of all of the points so prudence is the key. And plan for the worst.

Not required but a few reasons why I should have:

1) Most of that group were very green. If I'm being watched and people taking notes on how to do things, as a responsible "teacher" I should show them the right way. If they don't see a damper used and ask "what is that for?" They may not even know about them or when needed...If one of that group gets a steel cabled winch and is unaware of what a damper does... Boils down to being a good role model. Show people the correct way if you are in that position of others watching what you do and how you do it.

2) granted a synthetic line should/would just snap and fall to the ground if the failure is the line itself between the two vehicles/tree/etc. However, if the failure is the shackle or recovery point at the end, technically it could still whip back and basically be a projectile due to the energy/force.

Probably best case to be more safe than sorry. And regardless, I should not have been so caught up in getting it done I was not a good teacher to those watching me.
It didn't even dawn on me until I watched the videos and pics of the recovery back at home.
The point being is that you weren't paid to teach, you were just helping somebody who was somewhere they shouldn't have been. 2WD in the mud... sigh.

Great that you want to do better but don't beat yourself up for some details that didn't make much difference.

Has is actually been shown that a damper will stop a projectile if one of the end points fail? Or is it just to dampen a failed metal wire?

If a shackle fails I'm not sure the synthetic line or even a damper will stop one from flying through the air. Maybe limit it but if you're in the death zone...

Thanks, and agreed.
Whether paid or not, I always try and do what is right.
Because you never know who is watching, soaking up your good and bad habits.

It's like when I am in my shop restoring a vehicle.
When my kids (now grown) watch me, I want them to learn the right way to do an electrical connection, block sand a panel, actually use the measurements on a paint mixing cup, etc.
