I went with the RAM mount, claw, and tablet holder. Works well but my tablet doesn’t get gps offline. Haven’t figured out how to get that to work.
Only the ipads with cellar service ability have dedicated GPS.

CMM OFFROAD FORD BRONCO HARD TOP PANEL BALL MOUNT

BULLETPOINT - Micro Carbon Fiber/Kevlar Hybrid Mount Arm - Matte Finish

BULLETPOINT - Tablet Holder - Compatible with iPad, iPad Mini and Samsung Tablets
NICE Setup!!! Never thought of going overhead (y) So couple of questions....
- How did you get the arm to be so short? I just see the ball-end connectors on each side and no center bar/shaft. (NM - figured this out :) .....it's the 1cm version)
- I want to mount a 9.7 inch ipad there - will that mount fit it? Or do you recommend nothing bigger than a mini (too obtrusive?).
- So the iPad has to have cellular since you cannot "cast" from your iphone right? (no CARPLAY). How much is the cheapest cellular plan(and from what provider) you need to do this and make it work?

For the arm I use a Mini (9cm | 3.54") I did have to convert one of the Flange Sockets from a 20mm to a 1” ball end.

I have a WiFi plan in the Bronco so I hook it up with the WiFi an it’s good to go.
I use a iPad mini 6th gen that’s 8.3-inch (diagonal) display the BULLETPOINT mount is adjustable, expands from 4.75" to 9.25".

Your solution is probably the most cost effective one......I just tried grabbing my 10+ year old ipad mini and my eyesight is just terrible.... :(

You don’t have to have a cellular plan for the GPS to work offline, it just has to be cellular capable. For some reason they don’t put a gps receiver in the WiFi only models. Plans are about the same as for phones. Usually just bundle an additional line into your current plan.

It will work like the WiFi only models. You’ll just need to download everything over WiFi before going off grid. The gps will then work with the OnX app. Kinda the same as in a no cellular area even if you had a plan. Will even work on an airplane.

Thank you VERY MUCH for this tip.

I ordered one from CMM. A very nice product delivered really fast.

Dumb question. An easy install? No instructions either in the envelope or at CMM. I'm asking b/c I want to install tomorrow and it will be raining. Hoping that I don't have to take the panel out (and the roof rack off); hoping it's just a remove OEM fastener and install ball mount.

Appreciate any tips you can send my way. Even if it's as simple as, "hey dummy, just remove OEM hardware and install mount." That works, too. :)

Cheers.

Remove OEM hardware and install mount. The only tuff part is get the torq right so the latch works with ease and the right pressure on the panel.Good luck you got this.

I love my set up.

I too am working on an iPad mounting system for running GAIA in the Baja. Went with the Builtright Pro Dash Mount and ArmorX appliances (iPad case, arms, balls, claw, etc). So far so good. I'm using a 12.9" Pro for now. It's pretty heavy and may need to go smaller for stability. Will know more when we test it on the trails. Plans are to centralize power under/on the Dash Mount for cable management and stable power,
Also mounting a UHF/VHF radio. More to come.

American Adventure Labs has an overhead mounting system for the Lowrance system. Not sure where it mounts but it's supposed to be really stable.

I have an iPad mini mounted on an Archetype Racing “The” D grab handle using a RAM Mount EZ-Rollr’ case. I use the iPad for my JB4 tune, OnX, Gaia GPS and other maps.

What version of the iPad mini are you using? Thanks.

I bought my iPad Air 4th Gen without cellular capability. The GPS in it works fine when off road.

It’s also great for streaming live video/TV from a Starlink internet device.

That’s interesting as Apple says the WiFi only iPads don’t have dedicated gps functions, as well as every reference I can find. The only way it should give a location is if it’s receiving a WiFi signal for triangulation.

If I had my iPad in the Bronco, I'd be WAY too tempted to play Solitaire at stop lights (or flying down the highway at 65MPH). No thanks, there's already too many distractions.
