I'm currently at 14K and change and I plan on changing over to fresh fluids in both diffs and the center transfer case.

I went to the dealer where I purchased my Bronco and they have a "quick lube" type service in addition to the traditional service facility.

On a whim, and expecting to be pointed towards the normal service bay, I inquired about swapping in fresh fluids and replacing my rear differential cover with the Ford Performance version (Braptor). They said they could do all of that, no problem. $225 to replace the cover and whatever the fluids would cost. Not too bad actually. It looked like they did a whole lot more than swap fluids when I peeked inside.

For shits and giggles, I went over to the normal service department and inquired the same. The front and rear diff were $199 each. The transfer case was $299 and the diff cover would be 1.5 hours of labor (can't remember their hourly rate). Huge discrepancy.

I know it isn't difficult to replace the fluids or even install the rear diff cover and in fact, I can do this all myself. But warranty. Extended warranty in fact. I'm not exactly trusting of anyone else working on the car when it comes to service. Even on high end cars, I do all the maintenance as I know it'll be done correctly to exacting standards.

I do worry about a tech vs. a mechanic getting it wrong but going to the service dept. doesn't mean I'll get a mechanic. I did ask both departments about warranty related issues and they said there's no difference and both satisfy warranty requirements. I did not tell either department that I cross shopped them.

I guess if the "quick lube" department got it wrong, it'd be covered under warranty but I'd rather not go through that to begin with. I'd rather have my fingernails pulled.

I could just do it myself, replace all the fluids with OEM, and call it a day. I have no indication any of my diffs or transfer case has issues at all, it's just peace of mind. If I drain the rear diff myself, pull the drain plug and there's chunks, that likely opens a whole can of worms. If I replace the fluids and something breaks, they may blame me if I enter the info into the app.

Anyway, just thought the price difference was intriguing.

Okay, so did you ask them to clarify why there was a difference??
You mentioned replacing the cover to one of them. I’m guessing the other just misunderstood what you were looking for or just thought you wanted a normal fluid change without the cover.

Was actually hoping you'd chime in!

No, same request to both, both were fully aware they'd be swapping in the diff cover. I made sure to explain myself thoroughly and the guy at the quick lube dept. desk even asked if I had the cover already and I said yes. He then asked about a gasket and I said the OEM is reusable but it does come with a fiber gasket.

Right, but what I’m saying is maybe there was still a misunderstanding. I would’ve asked one of them to clarify why it was a different price.

Well if I did that, I'd end up paying the higher price!

Edit: I'll also add the service dept. rep looked at a sheet, literally a tri-fold pamphlet for pricing which I thought was odd. I mean I had pretty specific needs for a specific model and it looked like they had generic pricing for that procedure. He did go in the back to check on labor hours for the rear diff.

So the Raptor doesn’t come with the Raptor rear diff cover? I had just assumed it did.

I just purchased all fluids and the new cover myself to the all 3 fluid changes here in a couple weeks. Good luck to you!

It comes with the Raptor cover but not the Ford Performance cover for the Raptor. Two different covers.

But, most importantly the FP cover has a drain!

Was your concern with the warranty that if you, while swapping fluids / cover yourself, damaged something, it wouldnt be covered? We all know warranties aren't voided if you or a non-dealer change lubricants.

I just did my fluids and used the FP cover. It was pretty straight forward. I would never have considered the dealer or quick lube doing this. Mainly cost. It was expensive enough buying the cover and the fluids. It did take me a little extra time as I wanted to use the factory gasket- I had the extra expense of longer bolts and I had to make custom studs to use the factory plastic brake line clips. About 2 hours on the rear and 45 minutes on the front.

My dealer has the same setup . It is a lot quicker and cheaper to use their quicklube shop right beside the service shop. The quick service shop does light mechanical work but no warranty work. That frees up the service techs for handling actual service work.

Basically my concern is if something goes wrong with the diff, they could blame it on my servicing. I'm going to go ahead and change it myself anyway and stick with the OEM fluids and changes every 30K miles depending on use. Going with the fiber gasket as I'll never have to remove the cover unless something goes wrong. If I do have to remove the cover, I'll simply use the OEM gasket or RTV. I'll likely tackle this next weekend as I want to get it done before going to Big Bend.

I've never dealt with a warranty claim denial on a car, as a result of service away from dealer. But save your receipts and write teh mileage on them. That's what always made me feel like all would be fine, even if not true :)
