Like was stated some states stick it to you with a property tax type value tax on the vehicle plate. Ohio you pay when you buy it, new or used. So one vehicle can collect sales tax a dozen times in it's life.
The gas tax on every gallon of gas contributes to road funds too. That varies from state to state as well. California seems to have the highest gas tax an registration cost. I was stationed in California for about 2 years an kept my license, license plate and insurance in Florida where I owned a home to avoid the crazy fees. This was in the 90's so I assume it's worse now. I also avoided state income tax.
Looks like if I ever move from Ohio it will be back to Florida or to Tennessee.

My first vehicle registration for mine in Colorado was $998. Not sure how much it was last year. Somehow, even with rates like that, we still have some of the worst maintained roads in the country.

Delaware, 4.25% onetime fee when you title it, $40 a year for the first 5000 lbs., $18 for every extra 1000 lbs.
WTH? You in king county or something?? I’m in Snohomish and I renewed in Feb. I just looked at my registration and I actually paid $98.25. Dang, I swear it was about $110. Im not going to hate the government here any less though.
Ridiculous. Big government at its worst.Connecticut is a tax you to death state. In addition to the registration, as RagnarKon noted you also pay personal property tax on vehicles based on their value. The rate you pay is determined by your towns mill rate. Regretfully the cost for my bronco is even more than what RagnarKon paid as I live in a high tax town.
