Hi everyone, I’m James, the guy who almost became a Bronco owner yesterday. My wife and I drove our 2018 Toyota Sienna to Town East Ford to trade it in and buy a 2024 Ford Bronco Badlands. We spent hours negotiating in the afternoon and finally reached an agreement. But since we had to pick up our daughter from school, we put down a $1,000 deposit and planned to come back later to finalize everything. That evening, back at the dealership, we mentioned to the salesperson that we forgot about the $750 College Grad Offer. He said no problem and started preparing the paperwork while checking our credit. Then things took a turn.

The finance guy came in with new paperwork. The deal amount was the same, but the interest rate jumped from 3.9% to 8.19%. We pointed out that 8.19% must be a mistake—it should be 3.9%. Then the finance manager stepped in. He explained that we have great credit scores, over 800, but because we don’t have a long loan history, Ford Credit spit out an 8.19% rate. He offered to shop around with other lenders for maybe 5% or 6%. We were totally confused. After ten minutes of back-and-forth, the finance manager finally dropped the bombshell: per Ford’s rules, if you qualify, you can only pick one incentive—either the $1,000 cash back or the 3.9%-4.9% APR for 72 months.

We were floored. We explained that throughout the entire sales process, neither the salesperson nor the sales manager ever mentioned this “one incentive” rule. The sales manager even wrote down the deal amount with a 3.9% rate on his paperwork! But the finance manager insisted he’s the only one who knows the loan details. We were stunned. We asked if this was a Town East Ford policy, because if so, we could choose not to buy from them. He firmly said it’s Ford’s policy. When we asked him to show us Ford’s official documentation proving this, he couldn’t.

So, I’m turning to you all for help. Is it true that Ford’s policy limits you to just one incentive if you qualify—either $1,000 cash back or the 3.9%-4.9% APR for 72 months? For those who’ve bought a Ford this year, have you run into this? Should I even deal with a dealership I can’t trust? Thanks for any advice!

A lot of times that's how they will do it... Either take the rebate or get special financing. Though occasionally they will do rebate + rate. I'm not sure how the College Grad/Military/1st Responder works, I'd think they'd be able to do that + the rate. Doesn't say on their site "can't be combined" 🤷‍♂️

Yup, one or the other, rarely both. Check with your bank or credit union

I can't speak directly of this offer but it has been common practice for auto makers to offer incentives of one or the other. That said, apply for the lowest interest rate you can find from a bank or credit union and take that to the dealer. They will possibly beat it. When we bought our Bronco a couple years ago the finance department at the dealer already had our paperwork written up with a rate about 2.5% higher than what I was preapproved for at my credit union. I told him we would be using our own financing and he magically was able to beat it by a quarter of a percent.

I have never seen Cash Back plus Specialty Rate personally. It is most always 1 or the other. Should be able to get either or and the Grad Rebate. Do the math and give up the $1000 and take the rate all day, especially on a 72 month.

Yes, typically it’s either the rebate or special financing. Are you getting the Ford employee pricing they are offering?

With an 800 credit score, go get your own killer rate at a local credit union and walk into that same dealership, chest out chin held high and dictate your best deal.

A huge thank you for all your advice!

This afternoon, my wife called Ford’s customer service hotline to get clarity on this issue, and I wanted to share the update with everyone. The customer service rep confirmed that Ford has no official policy restricting incentives to just one choice. Since the vehicles are sold to dealerships, dealers have the freedom to set their own sales practices, and Ford can’t interfere. Their advice? When shopping for a car you love, make sure to also shop for a dealership you trust.

This proves that the sales manager at Town East Ford flat-out lied to us yesterday, claiming it was “Ford’s policy” and pressuring us to pick either the cash back or the low interest rate, which blew up our agreed-upon deal. I have no idea what kind of game Town East Ford is playing. Afterward, my wife called the salesperson and demanded a refund of our $1,000 deposit, telling them, “My husband doesn’t want to buy from you anymore.”

That's definitely a dealer who doesn't need your business. When buying you should negotiate a cash price with incentives. Then talk about financing. You're buying two different products, a car and a loan.

With a credit score over 800, your bank or credit union would love to lend you the money. The finance manager said you don't have a long credit history. You must have an excellent credit history or you wouldn't have that high a score. The salesman is lying. I'm willing to bet the dealer is getting a cut on the loan they're proposing.

Don't let the dealer shop around for you for a loan, they'll get a commission from anyone they set up financing with. That's why he made the offer. It wasn't to help you, it was to help them.

Years ago I was buying a car and going through dealer financing. He was starting to be a jerk about it, can't remember the details but included wanting a cosigner. So I went to my credit union and got approved. Suddenly the dealer forgot the cosigner requirement and dropped the interest rate.

But in your case, find another dealer. Go to the Texas Regional Forum on here and see what dealers people recommend. You can use the Search to search only the Texas forum for the word dealer.

Also some on here are buying from Granger Ford in Iowa and having their Bronco shipped to them. One person bought from Granger and had it shipped to Florida for $800. Post #114 in this thread.

If the dealer won't give you a refund, maybe you should contact the Texas Attorney General office. Also find out if there's a state agency that regulates auto dealers.

Also watch this video. These guys are very informative. The older guy managed one of the first Acura dealerships in Scottsdale, AZ.

My only experience with this was back in 2008 when I bought a Chevy Silverado. At the time Chevrolet was offing $5000 cash back or 0% financing. The offer was from Chevy, the dealership had nothing to do with it. They also had other “tier” offers, such as $3000 cash back with 1.9% financing. If you worked out the numbers it didn’t really matter what offer you chose, the final price of the vehicle came out the same.
