I know this is really stupid and it should be obvious but… I went to go check on my cabin filter so pop the glove box all the way down but now when I put it in, there’s a big grinding noise when I open and close the glove box door. I assume that bar is supposed to go into the housing on the side that has gears in it also. But it’s grinding. What am I doing wrong?

I don't think the bar is supposed to come out of the gear. You are supposed to open the glove box, then release the bar from the glove box(not the bar from the gear). There's a tab that attaches the bar to the glovebox.

How to fix what you got going on there, I don't know
Thank you! So weird as that bar just fell out of that gear when I lowered the glove box. I will just disconnect it and let ford deal with it on the first oil change.

Yeah - I had an "accident" with mine when I was trying to get to kick panel speaker and broke the gear - had to replace it - sounds like you may be heading that direction also.

When I pull my glovebox (I don’t do it often, but I did mount my amp in there so it’s been out a few times):

The bar will just pop out of the gear, and pops back in just as easy. The “instructions” do say to release the entire gear mechanism though, so I am probably doing it wrong. But it’s always popped right back in and worked fine - just have to make sure it’s lined up correctly

The gear provides the “soft” opening so it doesn’t slam down when you open it.

For the OP, it may just be some dirt or something has got into that gear and it’s dirty, or it could be stripped and requires replacement.

This is a very timely discussion. I took off the glove box and the little gear fell out. I tried putting it back but it doesn't stay in place. I am assuming it broke off. Is that correct, and there is no way of fixing it and it has to be replaced. I mean it works find without it other than it doesn't softly come open but it does open/ close.

Exactly what happened to mine - the soft open was basically shot after the gear fell out. It worked - but it was an OCD thing for me.

Is there a specific way to put it back into the gear so it doesn’t grind?
