Where I live, I can and do leave a FOB in the Bronco for days at a time. Last time was a or weeks. After moving it 5 days prior, I jumped in to head out. The display said no FOB present, or it was not recognized, I don't remember which exactly. Went in and grabbed the spare & everything OK. I bought the spare back in the house to try the one that didn't work. It worked again and has worked a few times since.

Would I be right to assume this is a battery problem? Makes me think I should keep a spare battery in the glove box.

Hard to say. I had that happen once and once only when the Bronco was very new. Did not replace the fob battery, and it has not happened again. If I remember correctly, I used the fob to lock and unlock the doors, and after that it worked normally.

Now nearing two years since purchase, I believe I will replace both fob batteries as a precaution. 2450s are pretty inexpensive.

Yeah, I bought a 2 pack on Amazon. I'll remember that. It'd be a real PIA if it happened away from the 2nd Fob of lock/unlock didn't work.

I was actually out of town at a meeting when that happened. Yes, a brief moment of near panic ensued, but in the end all was well.

I've never seen Fob not recognized - but I often get Key Not Detected. Certain spots in my Bronco just have a hard time picking up the key. Moving the key to another spot has always fixed it for me.

For instance, if I throw my keys and wallet in the door pocket (often do) - if the key is towards the front of the pocket, it won't pick up. Towards the rear it does fine. If I throw it in the center console under the HVAC, it won't pick up... move it back to cup holder it picks up fine. Won't pick up if the key is in the rear cargo area, but have had it work fine from the back seat.

If worse comes to worse, there's always the slot in the bottom of the center console - supposed to work even if the fob battery is 100% dead. I've never had to use it though.

Yup, Key Not Detected was it. It had been a few days back. Good to know even if the FOB was sitting in the center tray under the radio.
