Because it looks cooler outside. Or space... but mostly because it looks cool.
Also, a gas can tends to vent an lovely bouquet of fumes that kill brain cells while you drive ;)

I have always run the Wavian 20L Jerry Cans which, yes, you do need to vent every few days in temp/altitude, but it's a 20 second affair so not even the wife will mind.

As for storage, i'll fabricate a simple fuel containment box out of aluminum sheet to fit between the two floor tie-downs to hold two Wavian Jerry cans longitudinally that allows me to safely stack gear on top of the fuel box, thus not losing that space for storage inside.

The closest thing I could find to what i'm going to fabricate is the silly oil and lube holder that was used for the overland showcase model. Except i'll have floor provisions for the D-ring to flip up through the floor of the Jerry holder, and slots in the side so a ratchet strap will go across the top of the Jerry's, between the handle and body, snugly keeping them strapped down.

With the floor mounted D-rings going over the base of the fuel box, I can also use a spider net or bungees to secure objects over the whole of the cargo area. If those D-rings prove to not be sturdy enough, then i'll simply make the fuel box plate sturdier and affix additional tie-downs there and weld a few nuts under the cargo tray for bolts to hold everything down.

This stuff can be done yourself with minimal cost (assuming you already have the tooling and space to work).

Wavian Jerry Cans, if you aren't familiar with them, they are pretty damn awesome.

Hey Rick...Since you are so close to Canada, you should grab some Scepter Fuel Cans....Similar form factor but better than the Wavian (IMO) (When the borders open). The Scepters are pricy in the USA, but reasonable in Canada.

While also a good choice, I have not enjoyed their pour spouts and for commercial vehicles i've found that the military grade stuff is scaled for military sized fuel inlets!

There are lots of great articles on why the Scepter's are a good choice. Lots of it comes down to personal preference. Authentic Wavian Jerry's that aren't beat on have done me well. I wouldn't be as inclined to stick with metal containment if I had to store them outside, and they certainly don't travel with me to alkaline environments such as where I go camping annually.

cheap consumer grade cans stink. Never had an issue with fumes using a proper fuel containment device.
There's also the safety aspect to look at. In an accident, you wouldn't want one to fly around the cab or to split open and cover you with fuel. Turning into a human torch isn't my idea of fun.

Having used many different versions of the rotopax over many years I would only return to them again for the Bronco as a last resort. I’m not a fan, but they do have unique mounting options. If you wade into rotopak land do yourself a favor and toss the fuel spout right in the garbage and replace them with the water spout. Cali carb spouts are all trash.

I prefer the wavian fuel Jerrys and Scepter jerry cans for water. I’ll admit the wavian cans do need some rattle can love each spring to keep them fresh.

As the 2D has a smaller than desired fuel tank I will also be looking for fuel & water transport solutions.

Dream solution: swap out the OE fuel tank for a larger aftermarket tank & swap out the rear bumper with swing out tire carrier & a single jerry can holder. This is of course all speculation for now.

PEACE

I use Scepter Jerry cans for my water when I'm camping. I absolutely LOVE them. I have used quite a few other types, and Scepter is my favorite.

Even before this post I decided I might want to invest in Scepter for gas cans, too.

If you constantly scour the internet, you eventually stumble across good deals, especially if you are willing to buy two cans at a time.

Why not just put it inside?
Inside?

You must be one of those people who are buying that over-sized, practical thing with the extra doors for the backseat freeloaders.

The real Bronco doesn't have any room inside for Jerry cans.🤣

They make them for Jeep spare tire area and I’m sure for the Bronco eventually.

I've got this on my Jeep - works great. It does however add 80+ lbs. to the spare tire carrier and requires a heavy duty bumper mounted swing mount. I doubt the oem Bronco spare tire carrier is beefy enough.
