Driving in snow burning smell

I have been driving in the snow on 4A and noticed a burning smell. I thought it was the snow rubbing against the wheel well but it still persists. Any ideas

Hi, based on the “traffic” of posts on drivelines I am going to suspect you should drain the transfer case ( save a sample of the fluid in a small jar or plastic container) and look closely ( get a picture) of the metal collected on the drain plug. The transfer case uses two quarts of MERCON LV..
Also, how many miles do you have on this Bronco?

No snow in GA but I’ve noticed a strong burning odor as well. If you look on google its a commonly reported thing on this forum but Im not sure anyone has made a sound conclusion as to what it is.

The first time I used 4A I got an odd odor as well. Went away after about 20 miles on dirt.

This is my transfer case fluid .. Had three winters on it ( 4x4) and has only 6700 miles..
the front differential ( 1 quart) was just as metallic and dark.. I havn’t got to the rear differential yet.. Ford Store has shipped the other two rear differential covers I ordered.. Shipping problem! That’s gone on three weeks!!

I get it from time to time myself with 4A, got 46.4k on my girl, should do a fluid change soon anyway

I’ve driven in 4a a lot and never really noticed it until a couple days ago I did a cheeky little power slide up my snowy driveway just to test traction, and I smelt what you are describing when I pulled in the garage. 20k on mine.

Okay, time for everyone to drop that Transfer case ( TC) fluid ( especially if you have not done that before). I drained the fluid today on my 2023 Badlands with only 6800 miles.. This is its first winter but I got a liking to the 4A and it has spent most of the last month in 4A until today. I was able to drive the highway in 2H .. Here is the fluid at the 6800 miles vs. clean Mercon LV.. Unfortunately, there was no magnetic plug installed at the drain so no metal could be noted..
