I have changed the dash and rear speakers out and it does sound better. I didn't wire in any bass blockers for the dash. Is that a must-do when swapping them out or will turning the bass down on the head unit work also.

I wouldn't call it a must but there has been a couple that swear they hear a difference with the bass blocker. I went ahead and put them up front when I swapped my speakers and am happy with the results.

I have a set of 300hz blockers. I just didn't want to bother pulling them back out and spicing in if it didn't make any difference.

I would think it would depend on the speakers right? You find the specs as to which frequencies they produce, and if you block everything lower than that it will help keep the speakers cleaner.

But then again, I'm not an audio guy so I don't really know.

I bought and installed some 4" kicker DS speakers, and they sound great in the mid and high range, but they get overwhelmed in the low range, especially at higher volumes. I just ordered some 300hz bass blockers which should come in later this week. I'm also going to install boom mats since I will be pulling out the speakers anyway to install the bass blockers. Based on my experience I would recommend installing the bass blockers.

I installed 600hz bass blockers on the dash 4" Infinity Reference speakers. No need to install them on the rear 4" speakers since the head unit already rolls off the bass to those. I also have a Kicker HS8 subwoofer in the rear cargo area that provides the low bass that the standard system cannot provide. I recommend the bass blockers since they allow the dash speakers to deal with the highs only, and since I have a decent sub this allows the overall system to play louder with less bass distortion. Happy with the set up so far.

How do they compare to factory? I was thinking of doing the same.

Huge improvement in terms of clarity and sound output. The mids and highs sound so much better than the factory paper cone speakers. Just make sure to order some 300hz bass blockers because these small speakers cannot handle bass. The boom mats were a fail since the foam was much thicker than I anticipated and there just isn't enough room provided in the dash behind the 4" speakers to allow it all to sit properly. The good news is that since these speakers can't handle bass, the boom mats weren't actually needed, and as previously stated, the kicker DS speakers sound amazing.

The next step for me is to upgrade the 6.5" kick panel speakers. I just ordered JBL GTO629's since they got great reviews for bass. Hopefully they will provide enough low end that I won't feel the need to install a sub.

Interesting about the boom mats. I have some slim baffles in my cart. Debating whether to buy them.

I did install the 300hz blockers this past weekend and it does make a difference. I could add more bass from the headunit and a little more midrange. Sounds a lot better now after the install.
