I’m looking into some dash mount accessories because I want to be able to record my scenic drives using my phone/gopro. I’m looking into some options I saw someone mention an issue about glare trying to record from inside the vehicle because of the angle of the windshield.

I’ve never done any real video recording before, not mounted anyways. So I guess I have a few questions in regards to that.

1. Is the glare really a huge issue. In Minnesota colder drives in the winter battery life would be a concern trying to exterior mount. Also in general I feel better about mounting a more expensive option inside the vehicle.

2. If glare is an issue are certain camera positions better than others. Mounted high up vs down low. Closer or further from the glass. I’m also not trying to obstruct my view.

3. is glare an issue with all weather sunny vs cloudy?

Knowing this will help me figure out what dash rail if any I want to go with. Right now I’m deciding between the Tacform rail and the Expedition Essentials.

Thanks for any insight

thanks for the replies! I think I got enough feedback for an educated decision.

thanks everyone!

Glare is only an issue if the light source (sun) is low enough in the sky and hits the lens directly, like during sunrise and sunset. Even then your camera would have to be facing directly in the sun's direction. Now a dirty, hazy windshield will cause oncoming headlights to glare and smear across your windshield and the camera will pick that up. A clean windshield, inside and out will help to minimize glare. No glare on cloudy days.

I've been using a dashcam and dash mounted action cam for 10 years.

The BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) rails highlighted with the first Bronco announcement were never produced by Ford. Not sure if putting a ton of stuff on the dash was considered too unsafe to sponsor this. Nevertheless, the after-market has come up with a bunch of components to screw into the 'Accessory Ready' mount in the middle of the dash. I have the AR rail and have to admit that even tho it's flat black, the flat parts (see below) do reflect on the windshield on a sunny day. I have a friend with the same rail in Silver and it's much worse with that color. Regardless, it does give lots of options to install accessories. Cameras, phones, pass holders, etc. can all be set up here with a clear view.

I use a Quad Lock mount and phone case with my iPhone15 Pro. Was really pleased on our recent trip. Minimal setup, quick mount/dismount for the phone and image stabilization of the iphone made the video easy to watch. Glare wasn’t an issue but really had to make sure the windshield was clean in front of the camera and the dashboard free of light colored items to reflect. Obviously doesn't handle multiple accessories, but clean.
