I don't know of many vehicles that will ever retain a an alternate drive selection after turning off the ignition. Certainly none that I have ever owned and I've owned many. My last two BMW's always revert back to comfort modes regardless of what M setting they may have been in when I turned off the car. I think the lawyers probably ensure it's done this way to ensure the driver makes a conscious decision to change the drive mode everytime they turn on the car to absolve the automaker from any lawsuits. For example if I would turn off my car and it retained the last mode I was in the day before (an M-mode with traction control turned off), it snows overnight, and say my wife (who's oblivious to the modes) gets in and drives out in the morning after it could be a bad situation on slippery streets. One of my gripes with all Fords. The Drive Mode/Goat Mode does not remain through a true stop/start cycle. Other vehicles do, but I feel it is ridiculous Fords do not. Really bad when you are towing, stop to get gas, start driving down the highway and notice you have not been in tow mode the last 100 miles...
