Why do you need their call sign to contact them? I am new to GMRS but I also just purchased a MXT250 and used it with my buddy’s last weekend and had a blast.
That's my wonder as well. Doesn't everyone nearby on the same channel hear each other?

I'm new to GMRS. What's the purpose of this?
we've used CB's to communicate while off-roading in the mountains in the past. GMRS is basically taking over that role now days. Sometimes in remote areas your cell phone may not work. This will be the first year we use one and will see how it works out. From what I understand channel 16 is the one used by most off-roaders. To be a legal user you need a license but that license is good for basically anyone related to you and is good for 10 years.

Same goes for CB usage. But you can set up your GMRS so you and your friends only hear each other but everyone will still be able to hear you.

By transmission rules (used loosely) you are to use the call sign to identify yourself and the individuals using the frequency during a broadcast. This is monitored more while utilizing a large coverage repeater.

By all means make sure you do have a license whiles using GMRS, the fines of not having one is quite hearty, up to $30,000, and depending on the FCC agent having a bad day that is monitoring the frequency. There are ways to track where the originating and receiving broadcast are located. $35 for 10 years is well worth the price for insurance of keeping out of federal trouble.
