I am pursuing warranty coverage for a catastrophic engine failure.
While driving on the freeway, power cut out with no warning. I pulled off and had it towed to the dealer.
They found the drain plug gone and no oil in the engine.I was told be Ford that the valves are damaged.
But, they are saying if it is the valve failure issue, the no oil supercedes the issue and no coverage.
My insurance guy is saying with some cars there is a blackbox that monitors these kind of incidents. If there is, I might have some hope..
Let me know!
Thanks

Never heard of such a thing. The only info the computer may be able to read is time of failure. Its not going to tell you when then drain plug came out but it might have something for the low oil indication

Did a low-oil light come on?

not necessarily true. There's no FAA style black box in a car, but the ECU will snapshot *tons* of information at the moment of a CEL or SES light. things like, RPM, oil pressure, air temp, MAP/MAF readings, timing advance, all of it. Usually helpful info for a tech to be able to glean from an OBD scan.

Granted, no oil plug implies that the car was empty for a *while*, or that the plug wasn't torqued and wiggled itself out. Even then, lots of lights start going off way before the engine has reached a failure state.

Not to mention oilling the road down, and the amount of smoke coming off the exhaust, and the smell...not buying it! Underside of the vehicle should be completely soaked, and the bed of the wrecker that towed it as well!

When I was 16, I put chrome valve cover breathers on my Mustang. I failed to cut the holes in the rubber grommets. The pressure built up and blew every seal on the engine. I blissfully kept driving and didn't notice anything until the engine locked up on the highway. Wow did my Dad blow another gasket.....

Oh look at you claiming to know how much oil goes into these things. There's at least 34,217 threads on oil capacity so far...

/s
If plug came out going down the road then there would be the amount of qts of oil covering the underside that should be enough for the engine to have proper lubricant.

How is that?

Well, yeah. No oil in the motor is going to damage the valves.
Your post is lacking in critical info:
What year and motor?
How many miles?
Has the oil ever been changed, if so, by whom?
Drain plugs just don't fall out...

Thanks for all feedback.
It's a '22 2.7.
It started and drove 'normal' and stopped running while on the freeway about 20 minutes later.
I had my mechanic do the oil change. It was a quick one at 1500 miles. That was more than a month prior to the incident.
No oil where I parked it.
None of the 'assumed would happen' things happened--lights, warnings, smells, etc--presented themselves.
Based on a finding of no oil, Ford won't touch it. I'm still hoping the catastrophic failure preceded the plug loss. Or, if this is one of the bad-valve builds, that they would step up and retroactively recall the unit..

Still something missing besides the oil.

There have been no recorded 2.7 valve failures on this forum on 22MY Broncos yet...if that is what is wrong with yours, it would be the first. Did you happen to look underneath it at all when It was waiting to be towed? Or when it was on the tow truck? There's no way an oil plug falls out without creating one HELL of a mess! I just don't buy the whole story. Did you ask the dealer if you can take a look at the underside while they have it on the hoist? My thinking is the dealer just plain doesn't want to put an engine in this thing under warranty, and is looking for a way out. Anybody can drain the thing, and toss the plug away, then say "that's how it was when it got here"

Sounds like an expensive mechanic mistake. No oil under the car or on chassis under it makes me believe oil refill went right through without a plug to hold it or just never put the plug/oil back in.

How many miles since the oil change?
