Big Bend NP area in February

I'm kicking around the idea of 3 nights trip to Big Bend in Feb for the wife and me in the Bronco. It has been years since I have been out that way and I did visit there before in Feb and it was pretty nice weather-wise though I know it can vary quite a bit during winter.

Would appreciate tips and advice on planning the trip, things to see, lodging, etc. This would be a drive around and see stuff trip and not hiking or anything like that. Some light offroad trails would be cool. Some star gazing at night. Just a chill out trip.

Not looking to rough it too much with the lodging, but cabins or smaller hotel/motels would be cool.

We’re going back out there right after Christmas. Not many choices for lodging like you would find in a typical town or city. We stay in an RV park.
Far Flung has some decent cabins right there in Terlingua / Study Butte. I would do a google search and look at reviews for other choices. You can also stay at the hotel inside BBNP (can’t remember what it’s called).

Terlingua ghost town is quirky cool, and has a cemetery you should see. There are no difficult trails out there that I’m aware of. Just be sure to take provisions in case you break down. You won’t have cell service through most of the park and very little traffic on river road and black gap road. Everything is a long drive.
Take your passports with you so you can have lunch in Boquillas Mexico if it’s not real cold (crossing inside BBNP).

Inside the park? Nothing like what you’re used to probably. Tent or RV? We rent an rv spot in Terlingua just outside the North BBNP entrance.

We prefer NPS or USFS campgrounds or boondocking. Don't care for commercial RV parks

NPS.gov. You’ll need to research and reserve something now if you can. They fill up from November to April. There are 67 dispersed camping sites (a few of which you can get to in an rv) and 2 rv parks inside BBNP.
A few years back you could pretty much boondock anywhere as long as you were well off the road. Not any more.

Good info, thanks. Sounds like most N Ps anymore. Well have to do some planning soon.

I keep a house in Alpine and in the park often. We day trip to the oark. They are closing the Basin for two years in May.
Not much you need the bronco for im the park.

go to the state park. Big bend ranch state park. west of terlingua. More awesome trails to do and see.
all check out Christmas mountain. Christmas mountain requires reservations.

Stay in the Chisos Mountain Motel inside the park if you can find an opening ... central to everything and nice climate at 5400ft elevation. Just spent 4nights and 5days there at the end of Dec 24. They will be tearing everything down in the Spring of 2025 and it will likely take 3-4 yrs before you can get back into that location for anything other than tent or very small RV camping.
