Aftermarket Coilover Service Intervals & Cost

Between the commute to work, and medium trails on weekends, how often will a set of Fox, King, Icon (insert brands) coilovers require servicing, and what's the estimated cost to do so?

100% depends on use and care. Low speed trail time is not going to be the same interval as someone running high speed in the desert. On my F150 Raptor the factory Fox are at 32k miles. Mostly road but a couple of thousand higher speed off-road miles. They are still feeling good and no signs of leaking. I have not explored the cost of rebuilding yet. I am fortunate that I have a couple reputable companies local to me that can do the rebuild.

Per the reps at King, on mostly street use shocks, service intervals could be upwards of every 30k miles. Those doing hardcore offroad racing like the recent KOH, could be after every race.

I would guess the number of people who actually do have them serviced is small compared to actual users. I'd be interested in knowing the failure rate due to not having them serviced and how many years/miles that point is.

Intervals above are pretty accurate. I would expect 50k miles with normal street use. Cost will range depending on condition. If its just seals and oil, maybe $175-200/each. Not a bad idea to keep your old shocks as a temporary replacement whiles shocks get rebuilt.

I used to rebuild my own Swayaway and Fox shocks, not that difficult but you need a nitrogen regulator and bottle. The seal kits were $18-30, the shock oil was $40 per gallon. Add in replacement parts for damaged valves or other parts and it usually cost me under $300 to do all four. My DR coil overs had proprietary fittings for the nitrogen so I couldn’t do them myself.

I still hate that first set of Fox shocks with HREW bodies, had to rebuild them every 15K miles.
