It depends on the conditions of the highway. If it's mostly dry you wouldn't want to have it in 4 anything, but if there's a decent amount of slip you'd want 4H. 4L probably isn't something you'd use on any highway conditions unless there was significant unplowed snow you couldn't get through in 4H.

4A was non-negotiable for me since in CO the highway conditions change at the drop of a hat and manually fiddling with the transfer case on Vail pass after it'd been closed for 2 hours one night in March was the last straw for me. Highway patrol was leading people down 70 after it opened and it was either keep speed - about 45/50 mph when dry- with the pack in 2WD but then panic because we'd hit another stretch of ice pack and I couldn't shift into 4wd going faster than 25, or keep it in 4H and not got faster than 40 because my Xterra couldn't be driven at highway speeds in 4H.

Newer vehicles don't have the same speed constraints for transmission shifts but it's not something I want to be concerned with in any new ride I buy.
Got it. Thank you. Seems like a good option. 🤔

It didnt cause me any issues to have it on mine. But it was the only thing I added to the build.
I have a BD with only the mid package, but it’s a 2-door. So, I’m probably going to wait awhile anyway. 🤷🏼‍♂️

So, if I don’t have 4A, can I drive on the highway when it snows with 4L or 4H? Or only 2WD.
The important thing to remember here is the following:
  • 2H is full-time 2WD; can be used whenever you want, as much as you want, but only drives the rear wheels
  • 4L and 4H are part-time 4WD; these should never be used when you have adequate traction, like on dry pavement -- even rainy conditions typically are not enough slip to use part-time 4WD safely
  • 4A is full-time 4WD; this can be used all the time as the name implies, and is a true 4WD/AWD system that uses sensors and electronically controlled clutches to choose which wheels get what percentage of torque, based on how much traction they have

Here's a resource specific to Jeeps, but the basics of part-time and full-time 4WD are described pretty well: https://jeeps.thefuntimesguide.com/4x4_4wd/

If you don't get the Advanced 4x4 option, you won't have 4A and will not have any full-time 4WD capabilities.

It is a constraint, BUT there are other much more impactful constraints.

My view differs from many of the other people on this thread though.

If you live down south, don't see much snow, and aren't trying to optimize for crazy off-roading... I don't think there is any real value in adding it. For most people who will be driving their Bronco on a daily basis with the occasional off-road trip, it is not necessary at all.

If you do live where it snows, the Advanced 4x4 system makes a little more sense. 4A acts like an all-wheel drive system, and adds a lot of flexibility when driving the Bronco when road conditions are mixed. But if you don't live in that type of snowy environment... I personally think the $795 could be better spent elsewhere.
I’m trying to decide how much snow driving I’ll really be in 🤔

Id say the Adv 4X4 is the least of your issues, did you get 2.3 or 2.7 and did you get Auto or Manual?

2.3, auto
The only thing holding you back in my opinion is the top. If you were 4 door soft top youd have a build date. That being said id get it if you want it. That isnt holding your order up.

4A is super nice but I avoided it because it sounds like something with a lot of chips. It does appear to be a big constraint compared to the take rate. Last constraint list I saw has 4A listed as a 60% constraint but I assume it had a very high take rate.

I have a 2D BD with a 9/18 reservation. Build date next week. I pulled off everything with a computer chip that isn't 100% necessary except for the little door code thingy.

So, no mid package?

I'll concur with the rest of the posters here... I've been using my 4A in winter weather. We had a couple of big storms in northern Utah and the Bronco has performed really well in them.

I have no drama at all in snow with 4A. I just drive. Sometimes, I just drive through the big drifts the plows leave on the side of the road because it's fun. The Bronco just keeps on trucking. I didn't really have any use for it up until inclement weather and then realized how great it is.

Now, if I lived back in TX like I used to, it would be of less interest to me. :)

No Mid. Went with MT so not an option anyway. I also did not step up to the Badlands to avoid all of the gadgets. My goal was to have as little tech as possible which ended up working with the chip issues.

My current vehicle is AWD and the only time it is really helpful (vs a 4wd system) is rain on bad roads. You can accelerate like it is dry, especially around corners.

I don't plan on whipping the Bronco around like that so I don't need it on wet roads and it really is not hard to throw it into 4 if you hit serious snow.

And nobody wants to talk about it, but you are fine in most road conditions in 2wd, even with a decent amount of ice and snow on the road.

I wouldn't classify it as full-time, more like on demand or automatic. If you watch the power distribution gauge, more often then not, only the back tires are receiving power and the front's only receive power when under hard acceleration or slippage is detected.

I am pro 4A and my current 3 Fords each have it. My F150 has been set to 4A for the past 5 years, 100k miles.
