I keep hearing how smooth everyone’s MT is. Mine has been slightly clunky shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd, although not as much. Both while moving and when rowing through the gears while at stop. It gets smoother as the transmission warms up. I’m planning on having Ford check it out at the first oil change in a few months but wondering if maybe I should take it in now if it’s something that need to be fixed. Relatively speaking it’s minor. But just curious if this is just normal. Haven’t had a manual in years but i don’t remember it ever being like this on my other cars.

Also, having the 4.7 gears seems too high for me. I’m not fond of how quickly it revs up in first. The rest of the gears are perfect. Perhaps its good for rock crawling but not for the street. or maybe with a smoother shift from 1-2 this would change my mind.

Thoughts?
Before I put bigger tires on my JK, I started in second a lot: especiyflat and down hill.

I’m guessing a base with 4.46 gears on stock 30” tires would start in second gear easily. For the Badlands with 4.70 gears 32.8” tires it’s doable but probably not desirable if you value clutch life.

I've never noticed any difference on mine between the 1-2 shift, the the higher shift.

I'm used to the short first gear, my JKU was the same. It sucked at the dragstrip. 3 gears just to get to 60, and trapping in 5th.
There is so much wrong in those sentences 🤣

I find 1st gear to be too short in a few of my last M/T vehicles- including my 2014 Civic SI, 2016 Miata ND, 2016 Camaro with V6 and even my current 1997 Jeep Wrangler. I even have 31" tires on the Wrangler- stock were like very small 27 or 28". It could also be that the cars of today- even econo boxes have a lot of HP and fast shifting automatics that are so fast off the line that the 1-2 shift, if there is someone behind me almost rams into me during my 1-2 shift. It could be just that reason the gearing feels too short.

The odds a dealer having a Bronco in stock that is not a customer order and a manual transmission is likely astronomical.
I drove one at OC Welch Ford in SC. Stricktly a demo according to the salesman. Very smooth shifting. Very impressed overall withe M/T. I have driven sticks since the 70's.

My 2015 Passat TDI was geared too high for first and second, you had to give it some revs to avoid stalling. Making a slow turn into a parking lot required first gear, it would stall in second below about 5 mph. It didn’t seem to hurt anything as the clutch still looked great when it was replaced at 60K (flywheel problem, dealer ate the labor so I had the clutch replaced for cost of parts while they were there).

As usual, the "just X" comment in the thread has little to no value. Thanks for trying though.
simple solution for a simple problem

I don't find this solves anything.
the gear functions as designed. so no problem to solve. If OP wants a different gear ratio for first gear, they will have to swap out gears. Pretty sure that will cause more severe issues like voiding warranties.

So far our only issue has been going from reverse to third instead of first. But that was early on. We don't do that anymore. 750 miles on the odometer and no clunkiness here. Notice how I say "our" and "we" all the time? The wife is keeping score now! She's like, gimme the key, you drove last☹.

It's not a solution if it doesn't work...
What exactly doesn't work? First gear is short. That's the way it was designed. OP can either just start out in 2nd or regear their transmission and void the warranty. Skipping gears isn't a crime.

One of Granger’s demos is a Big Bend with a 7MT. Was very smooth IMO and I’ve had manual transmissions for the past 50 years.

Solves isn't the right word.

What I meant was, 2nd wasn't designed to be the initial gear...it doesn't work well to start in 2nd gear.

Little bit off topic, but what dealer in NC has a MT demo?
Just recently switched my order to have the MT as I've found I've missed rowing gears oddly enough.
Crossroads Ford in Apex. It is a BL with 2.3 and MT with the High Package.
