well, the classic alternate method to meet EPA CAFE mileage goals is to go with smaller engines and fewer cylinders.
eg, 1.5L 3 cylinder EcoBoost in the bronco sport.
the next generation will probably be a 1.0L 2 cylinder
i'll take ASS over smaller engine

auto makers are free to riff however they wish to achieve the CAFE goal.

i’d either 1) delete his phone’s carplay profiles on both the bronco and the phone, then re-add as wired only
or
2) have ford replace the antenna or head unit
i would do option 2 especially if other phones have the same issue in that bronco
it might be that his phone is located inside the vehicle at a location with poor gps reception or there's an noisy electronic device in the bronco 'jamming' the gps signal.
as far as i know, the iPhones use their internal antennas for GPS reception
