Go soft if you like SAS like ride or hard if you want to blast the desert. The adjustment is for fine tuning. For an everyday driver don't buy into the max performance tune. Popo rig is well setup but a lot of people would want something softer including myself.

Your just making a whip, you want the weakest link to be in the middle but not a failure point. I wouldn't worry about ruining gear, you will end up sacrificing something down the line to learning/desperation. Equipment also ages out and is the main factor for failures. My winch line is 2 years...
