I recall this happening too when I had my 92 Exploder, which was even more XJ-looking than the later ones. It's kinda fascinating to me how people look at cars and just see basic shapes and nothing else.
Yes! My 1991 Mazda 626 LX has this "feature". Honestly, I don't super hate it. Even thirty years later, mine still work fine (and I even have a full spare set), and it's a fun conversation point about my car. People are kinda shocked when they see it in 2020.

I'm 32, but same sentiments (and also IT). I spend so much time staring at screens, that honestly I wish the Bronco had less of them. But, I'm also navigationally challenged, and have come to rely on Android Auto and Waze/Maps. I'd be much happier if the instrument cluster was just standard...
