What do you mean "zero price point on electricity"?

Because I'm paying well over $4k a year for gas for my bronco. Plus our other vehicles.
Buy a hybrid CRV and call it a day. Or don't, I don't really care what you drive. You're the one that asked if $4 gas is an issue and no, it's not for me. I drive what makes the most sense for my use case which currently is a pure gasoline powered vehicle.

I just ran the numbers and I only spend about $800 a year on gas commuting in my Bronco (and an additional $400 or so in my bikes). That alone doesn't justify an EV purely for commuting, and the other things I use the Bronco for (towing/offroading) EVs, especially this segment, aren't good at.

Still, a vehicle like the Fathom or Slate would really round out my stable and would be good for the new teen driver I'll have next year.

Don't forget hydrogen embrittlement which destroys equipment. But nobody is seriously considering using electricity to manufacture hydrogen. 95% of Hydrogen is from Steam-Methane Reformation.
Yep, but that method of production would never scale to the amount needed to make hydrogen passenger and freight vehicles in any significant numbers.

I'd save 500-800/year on gas but didn't include the cost of electricity in the comparison, therefore it would be much less of a savings.
So you only drive like 3,000 miles a year? Then sure, yeah. Any car can work for you if you don't drive.

10,000miles/year, 20 miles per gallon is 500 gallons, at 3/gal that's $1500, raise it to $4/gal and it's $2000, by my math that's $500, I rounded up to $500-$800.

Buying an EV to save money on gas really doesn't pan out for me, and like I said that analysis doesn't include the cost of electricity to charge, the cost of upgrading my panel, or the cost of adding solar and getting my electricity for "free".

A gasoline vehicle meets 100% of my needs, an EV would meet 75% ish, why switch? I think in America we've answered this question. Choice is good, makes things better for everyone, just seems odd that Ford dropped one EV pick-up and is coming to bat again hoping for a different result, maybe this time will be different?

Clearly, the industry is now betting small EV's in the various genre's (sedan, SUV, pickup, etc.) are worth the capital investment. Makes no sense to me, because your still betting against the American electorate (who don't want our $tax$ subsidizing the EV industry), the American consumer (who are perfectly ok with carbon based infrastructure), and the American investor - who come on might be slow but just how long are they going to put up with this colossal waste of capital and profit?!?!

I think it goes back to Ford being a global company if they can't make a competitive EV they are going to get wiped out in a lot of markets where EV penetration is much higher, then have to leave those markets, and the moat around the American market will only last for so long.

Price point matters though. A lot of folks who were maybe interested in an EV F-150 at $40k bailed when the price ended up being $70k.

Things look a lot different at $30-40k.

I sure wouldn't want an EV as an only vehicle. But I wouldn't want my Mustang as an only vehicle either.

You're right, everyone is in a different situation.

For me, a 30k truck is a completely different animal than 80k. At 80 it has to do everything.

A 30k truck could just be a spare vehicle, doesn't have to do everything. And you could just charge it on a regular ass 120v 20a outlet no problem.

I do think for many people, an EV is a very good choice.

Maybe even most people. The average commute is like 30 miles or something

But I would also say, Public Transit is probably a very good choice for many people. Maybe even most people.

An awful lot of the population lives in an urban area. And just because something may be a good choice doesn't mean it should be the only choice - there are things other than commutes or trips to the grocery store. One size doesn't fit all.

I got nothing against this Fathom, or any other EV. Provided I'm not forced into buying it.

Yup, choice and options are good.

That's around a 24 hour charge to go from 20-80% on a Slate (63 Kwh battery).

Yeah but if you're not using it every day that's fine. (For me anyway) And that's probably replenishing about 120 miles of use, no one wants to be driving that penalty box for 120 miles - you're running errands or doing the odd commute in it.
