Was reading up about the ins and outs of replacing the brakes on the Bronco. One of the topics was regarding that the brake maintenance mode must be enabled when working on the rear brakes due to the electronic parking brake the automatic Broncos use. I've had an issue with my parking brake giving me an error for several months if not the last year now. I routinely used it since I attended the Bronco Rodeo and they talked about saving the wear on the transmission parking interlock by using the parking brake when on off cambers or hills. I'm frequently parked on an incline so that made sense to me. My parking brake going bad was always a PITA after that as I had to just let the Bronco roll into wherever gravity took it after it started acting up. I figured I'd have a go at removing those actuators once I got to doing the brakes, then life came along and the brake pads were lasting a long time so here we are.
Because I was worried that when I do activate the brake maintenance mode during the pad replacement that it may not want to come out of it, I decided before I pulled the calipers apart to engage the maintenance mode. And then I disabled the mode. You can hear the actuators rotating quite a bit in the process along with all sorts of warnings and tones. After this test run I noticed the parking brake is now working again and sounds very strong. It had gotten quite weak sounding over the last year when I did try to use it.
Did I just fix the issue for nothing? I ran it around town and used it four or five times without fault now.
