"Perceived" has been a sticking point -- Ford measured the improvements in sones. My $0.02….I think the funniest thing said in the launch was…
“Reduces perceived wind noise by nearly 20% compared to the 2021 Bronco”
We are measuring and quoting “perceptions” now? Simply stick a decibel meter in there…it’s either louder, quieter, or the same?
I didn’t know we had gotten to measuring perceptions and/or possibly feelings.
Sones measure how loud something feels to humans, how loud we "perceive" it to be. 2 sones are twice as loud as 1 sone.
Decibels measure physical energy, the pressure of sound. The same decibel can sound different depending on the frequency, or hertz. 2 decibels do not sound twice as loud as 1 decibel.
All that to say, that's why Ford used sones and the word "perceived."
The 2021 Bronco was coming in at 29-31 sones and now we are looking at 24 sones.
I got the sone figures from Ed Krenz, chief engineer.
