Hey everyone,

We've all been there – needing to air up tires, inflate camping gear, or even power air tools. When it comes to air pumps, there are two main camps: the portable crew and the fixed (on-board) enthusiasts. Both have their loyal followers, and for good reason! But which one truly reigns supreme in terms of convenience, performance, and overall utility?

Let's break down some of the common arguments for each, and then we want to hear from you!

Which Team Are You On?
Are you a proponent of the grab-and-go portable air pump, valuing its flexibility and cost-effectiveness? Or do you lean towards the always-ready, high-performance fixed system, appreciating its seamless integration and power?

Looking for The Best Air Compressor in 2026?
Wolfbox HyperFlow X on-board air compressor tested by our group member, proven to be robust product with high-performance.

I have been using an ARB single mounted in my tailgate with an AAL mount. I also have the ARB pressure control module. With this, I can set the pressure on my phone, hook the 4 ways, and sit in my cabin while I air up or down.

No real issues with my setup, yes, it not as fast as a twin, but that does not really bother me. The only issue I had was getting the APCM calibrated.

Before this setup, I used a Milwaukee M18 portable compressor. What you get with an onboard air is room. No worries about the portable being strapped down. Just turn on the engine and go. With the compressor being in the tailgate, I just hook up, and I am good. I use an EZFlate 4-way hose setup, and I also have the ARB single hose setup.

I have also ran both types. I had an ARB twin mounted and plumbed to a bumper chuck with an in cab dash switch. Super convenient. Sold that Toyota build and am back to using my old Viair 400 with alligator battery clamps On the Bronco. Not as fast or convenient but not slumming it either.

I have also ran a CO2 tank which was faster than both pumps but had to weigh, fill and mount tanks.

Although the difference isn’t huge I have found myself less lazy about airing down and back up with the hard mounted system, especially in wet/cold condition, and will be installing another on the new Bronco in the tailgate.

If you're doing heavy trails regularly, a fixed on-board air (OBA) system is the absolute end-game.

The reality nobody talks about with portables? Heat. When you push enough volume to fill up four off-road tires, these compressors get blistering hot. Wrestling a 200-degree chunk of metal back into its canvas bag and tossing it inside the cab next to your camping gear absolutely sucks.

Portables are great if you bounce between multiple vehicles or just want a cheap entry point. But if you air down every weekend, bite the bullet. Spend a Saturday afternoon running the wiring, and hardmount it. Once you have OBA, you'll never go back.

Using a portable now but would like to free up cargo space. However, your web site lacks key information:
  • What are the dimensions?
  • What is the mounting bolt pattern?
  • There is no full wiring diagram. This is necessary if someone want to use an upfitter switch to trigger the compressor.

It is hard to pull the trigger on something if you don't know if it will fit.

I'd love to have a nice on-board system but I wheel both a Gen6 and an early Bronco so a portable compressor is best for me. I would like to get a 4 tire hose set up though!

I went with an OBA system with the chuck mounted where my crash bar once was mounted. Even used the same bolt to lock it down. Full disclosure- I went with a knock off ARB off of Amazon that looks identical to the real thing. It has performed great and was around $240.

I think onboard mounted up nicely is a cool thing to have. Portable just makes too much sense for us, doesn't take up space 24/7 can swap it to the Jeep or the Bronco. Speaking of air compressors, if anybody is looking for better ways to air down we switched to using oversand deflators. We were going old school and removing the valve in each stem but that took much longer going 1 at a time. Definitely recommend!!

Portable as you can use it on more than just one vehicle, and some of the portable units now available can fill four tires faster than the on board compressors.

I use a Viaair that I bought for airing up my RV tires to 60 lbs. The volume is decent and it does have an air down feature with the chock. Granted I don't do a ton of wheeling, but it served my well the one time I needed it following some beach driving to air back up (didn't get too hot). Nice that I already had it and didn't need to buy something else.
