Never been a HOSS 1 Steering rack... HOSS 2, HOSS 3 and aftermarket... that is it... Vasher and 74 weld offered full racks... Not sure if 74 is still offering theirs??? Bronc Buster was offering a half Rack but it is starting to look like Bronc buster may not be in business anymore....

Steering rack cross sections.webp
The point of my question was that Ford Motor Company has only ever made two strengths of steering boxes, standard duty and heavy duty. I think the Hoss 1, 2 and 3 were applied by folks in the community, Ford used those designations for Suspension only, I think??

I think Ford did use the HOSS designations for the steering rack early on. I think you may be right that they have backed off that now and are currently using a standard duty - Heavy duty designation now that they are actually mixing and matching with the different suspensions. I actually think those were terms that Ford used early on though....

Those terms are more correctly used for the suspension options which just so happens to be tied to the steering rack options so it makes it easy to follow along.

But are there three 'grades' or just 2?

There are only two versions of the Ford manufactured steering gear.

This isn't entirely true.

It is a fact that Ford lists the Severe Duty Steering as non-compatible. And it's also true that using the Ford software installation method with the ProCal programmer, that it won't work.

What Ford doesn't also say is... for most people, even those who ~do~ have a compatible model Bronco, the ProCal programmer doesn't work anyway. I've not heard of a single person who had the Performance Tune previously installed who was able to make it work without spending hours on the phone with Tech Support and having them fix something remotely. And many folks without the Performance Tune are saying the same thing.

There is a work around using Forscan and FDRS on these forums, it works with all models of Bronco, including those which are not listed as compatible.

Well that sucks considering the price they charge for it.

What bronco do you have? The badlands sasquach 2023+ has the heavy duty tie rods and steering rack.

That being said, yes there are a lot of options for beefed up parts for the steering and suspension.
I was with a group of Broncos running Top of the World and one of the guys broke a tie rod we had a replacement tie rod installed in about 45 minutes. A good chunk of the time was getting him off the rock and into a better spot to do the repair.
I carry a pair of tie rods and all the tools needed along with the badlands 1.5ton off road jack, just in case.
Sounds good, I"m definitely going to keep some in my kit for next time, I'm a relatively new Bronco owner, so I guess I still have some kinks to work out.

Are inners the same, left and right, for 2024+ sasquatch steering racks?

IF the outer is stamped "Ford performance" it is a HOSS 3 and interchangeable with all HOSS 3s.... IF the outer is NOT stamped "Ford Performance" it is a HOSS 2 and interchangeable with all HOSS 2s.... HOSS 2 parts are NOT interchangeable with HOSS 3 parts; inner, outer, any of it... That is as far as tie rod parts go.... Remove the entire tie rod (HOSS 2 or HOSS 3) and the entire tie rod can be replaced with either the HOSS 2 or HOSS 3 with either rack.

Well, I know i have the ford performance ones. But, for keeping extras for the field it's the inners that break near the threading right? Do I need to keep 2, a right and a left? Or can I keep one.

Mostly inners, but not always.

L and R inners are the same, but you can’t mix HOSS 2 and 3 parts. The HOSS 2 inner is different from the HOSS 3.

Understood. I was going off of memory of seeing some spares someone had with them and they looked the same but they confuse you on parts sites by having them separate part numbers.

Appreciate ya!

Side to side they are interchangeable and will work to get you home.... BUT notice the "jog" in the outer casting. That is to avoid contact with the spring when turning at full crank.... With a left on the right (or vise versa) there will probably be contact with tight turns.
