Trail Map Survey

Did anyone else get an email for a survey on trail mapping and GPS Apps and services? It listed over 12 options many I had not heard of. I completed and closed the survey before thinking of taking a screenshot of all the options. I did get this screenshot at the end showing what ones I am using.

What Apps or websites do you use for mapping?

Gaia GPS is my favorite.

OnX Offroad is good for off-roading in particular, but the fact that they separate their off-roading application and their hiking/biking/skiing application (OnX Backcountry) into separate application really kills it for me.

I’ve been die hard GAIA since 2019. Have OnX now since ford gave us a free year but I can’t wait for it to expire so I can justify purchasing GAIA again, it’s just so much more powerful/capable and in my opinion user friendly once you learn it.

+1 for Gaia GPS.

I'm a long time user, and their huge collection of various map types is a real advantage when navigating off-road.

I still have the Ford Trails app on my phone. Amusingly it will still launch and I can see trail information, routes and waypoints that were last updated in 2023. But loading images or routing fails.

I liked the ability it had to overlay info from the vehicle, like roll and incline, on video recorded by the iphone camera.

I mainly use OnX but I wish it had waypoints for its curated trails like TrailsOffroad has. I haven’t tried Gaia either.

That's my biggest hangup with OnX too, and I haven't figured out how to map custom routes (I know it can be done, just haven't taken the time to learn - mainly since it doesn't really do waypoints anyway). I just kinda defaulted to OnX since it had nice CarPlay integration; although the CarPlay part kinda sucks and I'm halfway tempted to just run a separate iPad on the side for the map anyway.

I use ONX, the Ford trail app had potential, Windrock has their own app which is decent for their application.

Yeah, I have a cellular iPad Mini which works great as a dedicated OnX display, tho I still primarily use CarPlay.

OnX does have Waypoints. You can add points and mark them as trail heads or waypoints etc.. I found a shared OnX Rubicon trail resource that includes tons of waypoints. Not that I plan to do the Rubicon with my stock Badlands, but it is cool to check it out. Hence, it’s annoying that the curated trails from OnX has no waypoints when it’s certainly possible.

Another thing I don’t like about OnX is you can’t save curated trails to any organized list. They all appear under “Saved”, but I’d like to make subfolders for “DONE” “Next“, “Consider” or maybe folders by location.

There are OnX YouTube classes which I still need to watch to really learn how to use the app.

Onx is great to build a trail route and share it, it is a pain on trails not in their system. I have all but gone old school cartography.
