Fuel smell in cabin…extreme heat in AZ…HELP

I’m hoping for some guidance. I filled up my gas tank today and topped it off (I know). It was fine for about an hour and then at idle, I get a smell of fuel in the cabin. Actually started smelling it when I auto started it after sitting for an hour. I don’t see any leaks under the vehicle or under the hood. When I start driving from a stop it is a slower accelerating. Better in Sport mode but still not the same. It still smells when I idle. It’s been a few hours. I’ve asked a mechanic friend of mine and did an AI search. The consensus is that there’s no mechanical failure but the smell of fuel vapors at idle is disconcerting. I know the extreme heat plays a factor. Has anyone else experienced this??

Overfill plus heat expansion. Did you check your gas cap door to see if it overflowed there?

I once got topped off by a full service gas station in Canada because they insisted on rounding up to the next dollar. I ended up having fuel flowing out of the gas cap door and down the side of my truck (not the Bronco) when I got down the road several miles.

I checked. It’s not leaking there. I only topped it off a few cents but topped it nonetheless.

Most likely, topping off fuel tank caused excess fuel to fill evap canister. After fuel level drops it should (hopefully)dry out and fuel smell will disappear. If it doesn’t clear itself out after some miles on this tank you will possibly get some codes for system issues. The heat we are having will cause more vapors than normal, but if the evaporation is saturated with fuel it will take some fuel usage to get it dried out. Smelling fuel is very disturbing but my guess is you’ll be alright. STOP topping off the tank!!

I will never ever top off the tank again!! That said, how long before I know if the canister needs to be replaced?

It will probably fix its self with drying out. If you get to the end of this tank and you’re still smelling it you may need to get it checked, but I think if it is something that will need replacing, the vehicle will throw some codes. Otherwise it should last a long long time, like the life of the vehicle.

You’re welcome…..Let us know here on this thread if it goes away on its own or if you end up needing to repair something. Again I’m just guessing that’s what’s causing the fuel smell but could be something else.

Go drive the piss out of it.... if it is just "too full" you should burn enough/pull enough vacuum to clear it out, BUT first check under the hood around the fresh air inlet for any liquid... no open flames please!

I opened the hood and looked around and there isn’t a smell of fuel under the hood. It’s just strong in the cabin coming through the vents and under the wheel well near the tank
