I had my old Jeep Rubicon from new (2012) until last week. So basically 13 years. In that time I had a total of zero stone chips on the leading edge of the hood. The one great thing (out of a few) of that Wrangler was the paint quality.
I was about to buy a 2026 Toyota 4Runner, browsed their forums where everyone was ppf-ing this, and ceramic coating that because they all complained the Toyota paint had the toughness of a wet tissue. So at that time I was prepared to get a bug deflector to help save the front leading edge. No way am I going to drop $5k + to cover the paint in a plastic film...
Anyway, so fate for once intervened favourably and I bought a Bronco in the last minute against the 4Runner. The paint on my Heritage is stunning looking - not just the colour but also the apparent quality of it. I love the way it looks au naturelle but would hate to find out that the leading hood edge is susceptible to debris damage.
But is it? Or is this puppy's paint sturdy? Otherwise should I get a bug deflector? The thing is so pretty I mean handsome as is, it almost seems a shame to put this onto it:

Is it worth putting a deflector on this nose?

I got a big ding right on the hood line from a rock. Now it’s one of those things I can’t unsee! A deflector would have avoided that. However it is ugly but not much of a choice if you’re not willing to repaint every time it happens. Apparently it costs more to repair because it is an aluminum hood. So I’ll fix it and most likely get the deflector.

Dood that sucks! Ok getting swayed back to getting it. Worst case scenario it is ā€˜onlyā€˜ $80 and if it truly is fugly I can just take it off.

Here is the hood deflector. I have it too on mine, which is also green. I agree with LeJ512 above, it ties to the other black elements of the car, doesn't stick out like a leather "bra" on a 1998 Nissan Altima (admit it, we all had one....). That little bump in the deflector, disrupts the air flow over the hood too, creates a bit of an airflow void on the hood, thus reducing some of the wind noise against the windshield. I've seen fluffy snow flakes when driving get pushed up right over the top of mine several times from that little lip. I've also seen rain beads on my hood flow forwards towards the front the car while doing 70mph on the highway, indicating the air bubble created over the hood area.

Personal preference, but would recommend the matte black version to blend it in with the trial sights on the hood.

how is the fit? Some have complained that the ones they received are too short.

Mine is a perfect fit. I did order mine though through the Ford Accessories catalog in 2024, not sure if it's still there anymore though. It's called the AeroSkin. Through Ford, it was about $90-ish.

Edit: The Ford Accessory site shows an AeroSkin, but it doesn't have the bump anymore, which I think is the most important part, thus the Amazon option instead..

I was about to install the Ford Accessories bug deflector and said ā€œOh Hell Naw! I tried painting it and it just flaked off even after all my prep. I went to have it vinyl wrapped to match and they said they couldn’t do it because of all the radiuses on the bump especially. They suggested a local paint shop and they knocked it out out of the park. They sanded the pebble finish off, used bonding agent and some kind of flex agent in the paint. It cost me an additional $225 but it was worth $500 to me. My windshield used to be a portrait of bug carnage and now it rarely sees a bug splat.

I put one on mine due to a few chips I noticed on the leading edge of the hood. I can't decide if I want to keep it or not. It looks great, but it causes noticeably more hood flutter than when I didn't have it on. Had to crank up the bump stops to stop most of the flutter, but it's definitely still there and you can tell the front of the hood has been cranked a bit higher up. Still deciding if I want to keep it on or take it off in the spring.

As @MachingBird said, get the sheild prepped and painted to match.I do not like the black plastic look nor the sheild bump, but after painting to match, the bug bump is not AS noticeable and having owned 2 Broncos,1 with a sheild and 1 without,I can say they do help.

Ooof. Now that is the only way I’d get a deflector… to cover up a hickey like that.

The rock chips are bad with the Broncos. My first Bronco got tons of little chips. I ended up getting another Bronco for a bunch of reasons, but PPF is a must IMO if chips will bother you.

I live in the land where mosquitos are the size of birds… summer trips up north my vehicle is LITTERED with bugs….few sprays of bug remover and they all come sliding off. Not a single chip on the hood either. I’d pass on the deflector.

YMMV

I have more little dings on the door from rocks getting chucked up before I put mud flaps on. But I bought the thing with intentions to use it other than mall crawling so I guess I’m not as overly concerned about that.

I put one on mine after the first windsheld got taken out by rocks. So far, none have crashed into it.

While I don't think it looks good, it at least doesn't look out of place since it matches the rest of the 'not quite black' parts of the Bronco.

It does not cost a penny or minute more to paint ALU. Total BS. Just put the deflector over top. A good pdr tech can get that out in 20 min.
