Goodyear Tires Stock 35"

Growing up reading Peterson's 4wheel, Off-road, Fourwheeler magazines, 315's have been referred to as 35's by auto writers and off-road enthusiasts'. It's an abbreviation not false marketing, blows me away that 40 years later people haven't figured that out yet.

Just hearing how many people get punctures but I don't know if they air down. I had Toyos on my Jeep and never had a problem with them off road however I do not like them in snow or ice. I have always been a Cooper guy but never had their full offroad tires just A/T. When I lived back east, I LOVED my Supper Swampers but they would not be the best thing here. I am in Millcreek and work in Park City.

traction wise I've been fine with them. However, I know the sidewalls are thin and I've got some good shredding going on at the sidewalls. Uwharrie / rocks are the culprit of course as @contented and others on the forum can attest to. Depends on your use case, as always. For what it's worth, when I need to replace mine whether my hand is forced or they're worn (less likely), it won't be goodyear territories going on...

Measure a 315/70R17 aired up and under load then put a 35x11.5x17 aired up and under load..

Here, let me do that for you:

315/70R17 aired up and under load = 33 1/8

A 35x11.5x17 aired up and under load = 34 1/4

The difference is over an inch! Just stop please....

The market (i.e. everyone who counts - Tire manufactures, vehicle manufactures, "off road" aftermarket, etc.) says both of those tires are "35's". Go to any retail tire store or information source (e.g. https://tiresize.com/calculator/) and both of these tires are "35"'s.

You or I or anyone else might not like it, and we can measure just as you have, but it does not matter the market is what the market does.

You might shake your fix at this status quo, campaign against it, etc. but right now most just don't care

You are going off manufacturer stated specs. Those manufacturer created specs are intentional to make you think a 315 is a 35.. it is NOT, and it's not even close!

I ditched the stock Goodyears yesterday for the KO2's after 18K miles.
I drove the Goodyears hard around the Alpine Loop and San Juans and they did ok.
They aren't the greatest tire but did most things decent. They collect and throw rocks in a
bad way on and off road.

I have less than 100 miles on the KO2's and the ride is softer and much quieter than stock.
I also noticed that the fuel economy has fallen off by 1 mpg. As mentioned they sit tighter in the wheel well and appear slightly taller than the Goodyears.

I'll be on Poughkeepsie next week and can't wait to see how the KO2's work.

315/70r17 calcs out to 34.4.

Then you get some squish when it’s loaded down. So that’s even shorter then

So yeah, it’s not really 35”. But - most people still call it a 35. Maybe we are just lying to ourselves. Maybe I use the same ruler that my wife claims measures 4.5” out to 8.5”. I’m still claiming 8.5.

I’m ok calling it whatever - even if I am lying to myself.

Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - 315/70R17 34.6"
Falken WildPeak A/T4W - 35x12.5R17 35.1"
Toyo Open Country M/T - 315/70R17 34.6"
Micky Thomson Baja Boss A/T - 35X12.50R17 34.5"

Yes, thicker/stiffer sidewall construction (generally, but not necessarily, indicated by load rating) will mean less squish with load (tire on the vehicle).
