I’d like to see a video of the easiest way to do it,or how hard it was for one person.

Got mine. Everything seems intact with no cracks or blemishes and was well packed. Also surprised how thin the plate is but the hinges are huge
The packaging was truly astounding. Wasteful, yes (boxes within boxes within boxes), but there was zero chance those items were going to be damaged during shipping. If your plate is cracked, that happened at the factory, which is more damning for their QA.

Mine is cracked in the same exact way, that combined with the blemishes I am sending it back. Ford Performance customer service said no exchanges, so return it is. Check yours, apparently lots of QA issues going on..
How easy was the return? Would be nice to just drop at a dealer, but I know that would be too easy since it was mailed to my house

Contact the tech line and warranty. They are aware of the issues. They replaced my hinges, exoskeleton and bolts.. Because I had a bolt get stripped, I had to destroy my exoskeleton to get the hinges off. A few pics and emails and they took care of it.

You can also chat with them on the performance parts website.

Given how many have been posted here with cracks/blemishes, I’m wondering if Ford did a dent/scratch sale to offload inventory while retaining decent profit.
I cancelled my order before shipment so I haven’t been able to examine up close. My speculation is the cracks are due to thermal cycling and the bond between the metal plate and plastic is cracking as noted.

Perhaps making so fast and not letting fully cure before shipping? Obviously demand is high as they went on temporary back order almost immediately.

I might add that having a scratch & dent sale is perfectly acceptable….as long as the consumer is AWARE that is the type of product they are receiving. The FP site doesn’t disclaim that so I think it’s an unexpected manufacturing issue of sorts and not an intentional scratch & dent sale.

I picked up this and installed it, replacing one hinge at a time using a sawhorse for a bit over two hours. I cannot be happier with the results!

Installing mine tonight, just wanted to confirm a couple things I’ve read in this thread:
  • I’m planning to just have my son and a table w/ jack help me hold the tailgate as I replace the hinges. Is it necessary to do steps 3-6?
  • Ford Bronco Spare tire mount reinforcement kit now available from Ford Performance Parts 1740280585817-6i

  • Ford Bronco Spare tire mount reinforcement kit now available from Ford Performance Parts 1740280642845-bz
  • Also, I read that the internal portion of the hinge, the existing piece is the same as the one in the new kit - can anyone confirm? No need to replace if they are the same.

  • I didn’t get a new bumper stopper in the package, how necessary is it?

I only did step 6. But I just laid the entire tailgate in the rear of the bronco (propping up the side with the wire so as to not put stress on it). If you're going to remove the tailgate, then you need to disconnect the wire which requires steps 3-5.

I did not replace the big bare metal brackets. As everyone else stated they appear identical to what is on there. Maybe they're just included as part of the kit so if it's used for repairs or something. And I'd assume it also requires removing the right rear fender to get those replaced.

You won't get one. The kit had a replacement body panel clip to hold the existing rubber baby buggy bumper in, but you reuse the one you have.

Anyone happen to know the part numbers for the conical bolts that hold the brackets on to the tailgate?
I was able to use my existing ones, but the heads are really bungled up from previous owners using wrong bits and painting them.. Would like to replace them if they aren't outrageously expensive.

Weather has been crap lately, so I haven’t been able to install mine. I did check the box and it looks like the exoskeleton is ok. I will try to install next weekend. Already have a gloss black Bronco, so I’m trying to decided if I want to use that one or the one that came with the kit. I guess once removed, it would be a lot of work to get it back on.

So everyone used Torx plus 40 bits? Last I checked the fit Torx 45 bits so my thinking would have been to get tp45 to fit the bolts on the hinges
