Hello All, I've been seeing the 'reliability' marketing ramp up from Toyota to push the Land Cruiser out to everyone's driveway and I started thinking about it.

What makes Toyota significantly more reliable over Ford (and Broncos)? Maybe the question I should be asking is are people buying a Bronco for reliability or for fun? Who want's to take a long road trip with the family and have an increased chance of your ride taking a shit. (I remember seeing multiple people post about this when the 21's dropped and there was quite a bit of 2.7 engine failures).

Toyota use to be the best because of the Japanese Parts. Now they are the same parts as everyone else.

Odds of a road trip taking a shit is pretty dependent on the owner more than the vehicle.

Thanks for sharing. Honestly didn't think that they're doing the same shit as every other manufacturer.

That's a very valid point.

I had a 21' for a year (was one of the first lucky people to own one before the masses) and had to sell it. Looking at buying another one soon.

Edited because I'm supposed to be working and butchered some words.

Having worked at a Toyota dealership for almost 12 years now, there is not a single part on these that makes them more reliable than any other vehicle, Toyota is just really really good at publicity. The new tundras and Lexus LX have engines self destructing to the tune of 108k vehicles (more not effected by engine recall).

Back in the day Toyota had a superior manufacturing process for two primary reasons:

1. Quality was devolved to the line workers, any of which could stop the production line to resolve an issue. An example of Ford, for instance, is that stopping the production line to work out a problem quickly escalates up the chain and you got executives on the floor demanding things get going again.
2. They designed and used simpler, more modular parts that again, focused on doing things right in engineering first. An example was a chip being designed that was susceptible to heat; Japanese manufacturers would place that part away from, say, the exhaust. American car companies would use a heat shield and clamp it onto the exhaust because reasons that involved cheapness.

Based on these, the vaunted Toyota manufacturing process worked pretty well until they started building millions and millions of cars (at least briefly, they were the largest vehicle company in the world). At that point, they couldn't give that latitude, or find enough well-trained and conscientious workers to continue to operate this way. Also, automation and parts outsourcing took a lot of it out of their hands, plus the shear complexity of cars means it's really hard (read: expensive) to get there consistently.

So, Toyota these days is perhaps only marginally better, and indeed tends to stay with older technology longer.

I would guess Ford on balance is still behind Toyota in a lot of ways, but the effects are more marginal and Toyota has big fails like the engine fiasco more often than before. Remember, for instance, Ford had the issue with tools being left in engines; they caught it early enough it was pretty limited.

Moral of the story: Shit happens with you build 15-20 million vehicles a year.

OMG, what?!?! Why am I only learning about this now???

Should have stuck with the uber reliable 2.7 that had zero reported issues </s>

Every vehicle manufacturer has issues. The Bronco is not some superior quality built vehicle... We've all seen how their QC department likes to take extended lunch breaks.

There's been some legendary videos done about Toyota reliability over the years. The classic "kill a toyota truck" video from Top Gear was the first to come to mind. for me, current gen Toyota is nowhere near the level of reliability & reputation of days of old, but it's still an entertaining video:

This is why Toyota gets to claim the reliability card:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/post-your-high-mileage-100-series.270848/

trucks in there that are creeping up on 400/500/600k miles, and they're doing it on nothing but oil changes.

I most certainly bought my bronco for fun, but have been nicely surprised by how reliable it's been, some small issues here and there, but nothing affecting reliability for almost 62k miles now.

Nah... Even the Japanese part quality gets worse. The 2019 Takata airbag safety recall is a warning sign. It is used on many brands (Ford is impacted).

Well, we are just so spoiled by modern tech. I mean if you watched the Sand Job (the latest grand tour episode), you can see a bunch of junkyard cars still running on the street.

let's be honest here, even old Toyotas can't hold a candle to those 1970's era diesel Mercedes sedans. Back in HS, i worked at a Jiffy Lube and we used to see dozens with well over 300k miles come in for oil changes. i wouldn't be surprised at all to see them on the streets still to this day.

I doubt any current gen Toyota truck is any more reliable than a Ford product in the grand scheme… lots of issues out there right now with them. They are just marketing off the long-standing Land Cruiser nameplate but it will likely have same issues as Tundra and Tacoma. So overpriced and the sense of quality just isn’t there like it used to be in their previous-gen vehicles.

I still have my 21 no problems, except driver induced problems.
