Howdy!
Figured I'd do an "intro post", I signed up a few days ago as we get start getting a little more serious about a new Bronco - and we tend to go from, "What you do think of a ..." to one being in the garage
So we might be owners sooner than later!
Quick background, long time car enthusiast, have owned 20+ in the last 22 years with the wife, all over the place in terms of wants/needs at any given cycle, I've owned: highly tuned Supra, 4 Vettes including a Z06, multiple BMWs, a DD/RT, T4R, an S2000,a couple of convertible Mustangs - I've road raced, participated in a ton of shows, or just enjoyed the heck out of driving over to the beach and just sitting on the tailgate
A little over 3 years ago, after a period of ruminating over getting something electric, we had the perfect alignment of wanting something fun for out here at the beach + never having owned a Jeep (Wrangler) + the 4xe dropping and an available $7500 through the FTC program (applied at lease execution). It all kind of came together. Once we got the 40a EVSE (aka "charger") installed, it TOTALLY made sense, especially with our use cases, we work out of a home office, drive pretty low miles (< 5K a year), so even with the pretty meager electric only range on the 4xe, we easily are able to run it that way, 90% of the time (while retaining the perks of extend miles on gas + extra power on demand). The DD/RT got sold (bought it off the lease for $30K, sold it the same week for $42K
) and got into a '21 Wrangler 4xe, Sahara, most options.
At the time I had a nicely setup '19 GT convertible, GTPP, 10sp, a few mods, Orange Fury (loved that color), but since the Jeep could do the (granted not as easy ...) convertible thing, and I was kind of all in on one vehicle being a BEV (vs. a PHEV), and having inexpensive home charging, I got rid of the GT and picked up a '21 Tesla Model 3 Performance. The EV experience kind of blew my mind as a long time ICE enthusiast.
I will be very diplomatic here and say that we grew to greatly dislike (the) Tesla
The Jeep lease expired April, the Tesla June, however in April we chose to return the Tesla early by 2 months. Tesla aside, it actually made more sense to keep the Jeep a little longer since we wound up getting a nicely optioned BMW iX50, which is f-ing fantastic, but I didn't want two BEVs that were kind of the same sort of vehicle (4-door, fixed roof). So Tesla goes back, we extend the lease on the 4xe (we can do this, a month-at-a-time through October).
We kind of intended to get another 4xe, a '24 with the better display, some new safety features, but Jeep rates have been craptacular, and with the delay we've really started re-thinking it. We love the roof, door options, we love having something decently capable for driving on the beaches around here, but we're into the vehicle, not the brand - so when we started thinking, maybe go with a 2-door, maybe skip the 4xe model (2-doors would force this), I was started thinking, maybe try something else entirely - like a Bronco. Without the 4xe tech, the Bronco seems more compelling (especially the ICE options - see below). Since this is the lower use vehicle, it'll only need gassing every 2-1/2 to 3 weeks, and when the 4xe gets cranky over not using the ICE, we're basically dealing with an ICE vehicle for an extended period anyway (if anyone was interested, I can elaborate on this).
So here we are - and it only took about 600 words to get here ...
We're looking at a 2-door, most likely the '24 Black Diamond trim with the V6/10-speed, mid-package (I'm pretty interested in the Ford tune that's available). Looks like for '24 the larger display is standard in the BD package and the standard wheels I totally dig on (love having a ride with chucky tires for parking up at the old city, being more or less curb proof
)
I'm not seeing much in the way of discounts, the lease options are pretty terrible, I'll have to really lean into shopping around, wouldn't mind ordering, but we're pretty flexible on the color, somewhat on the trim, we could do something different, so if we score a deal on an in-stock vehicle, that's cool too.
