Anyone else miss a hand brake?

I’ve never seen one fail after it was applied. Stuck in the cold but no failures while the vehicle was parked.

Much older car of mine, circa early 1980s, cable broke whole applying the brake. Technically it did not fail *after* it was applied

So the message is you knew it failed. When you have an electronic glitz, like these like to do, you are SOL.

I wish it auto-released when you put the vehicle in gear. I have one vehicle that does and 2 that don't. Since you have to have your foot on the brake to start the vehicle having to reach and unlock seems cumbersome. Not that big a deal but I would prefer the auto release.

Because you've never once heard of a cable operated parking brake failing?

Electric e brakes have far fewer moving parts.

I work at a Ford service department, have only seen one electric motor e brake fail at the caliper on a transit and that was from external damage. Very low failure rate and have been around for a while.

Now for older cable operated e brake, they constantly fail especially in the superduty.

Since I have an automatic I don't really care but I feel for you manual guys.

I didn't even think I had an e-brake at first because when sitting in driver's seat I couldn't see it for the steering wheel. In an emergency I doubt I could even find it in time to do anything. Give me a cable one anytime. Either hand pull or foot push. In the mean time I've started practicing using the one I have. For off roading and stopping for pics on inclines looking over drop offs I still don't trust the electronic brake very much.

The Bronco E-Brake DOES automatically release when you give it a bit of throttle in forward and reverse.

Thanks. It's the wife's Bronco so I have less play time but I'm definitely checking that out.

The electronic parking brake is pretty universally derided. Nobody likes it. Especially those of us with a stick. Don't even use it when I park, but it's a pain to use when you are in neutral and idling, like say the ATM or a drive through.

The bar graph tach is also pretty much universally derided. IMO, the analog spedo should have been a tach.

Forward yes, but you have to goose it quite a bit in reverse. Wish it disengaged automatically when you put in the clutch instead.

If I try backing up like a normal person (i.e. let up the clutch) it wont go any where, and even a little gas won't do it, so you have to give it quite a bit of gas. It's pretty "herky-jerkey" in R. In 1st I don't really have an issue with it.

@bigblockfox545 .... can you elaborate on what happens when the Electronic E-Brake is engaged during an emergency situation when the vehicle is at speed? Does it engage gradually?

All I know is that with a Manual Hand E-Brake, I can adjust the brake force as needed during an emergency.

I prefer (like) an electronic parking brake. I do have another car with a hand brake and rarely use it.
