Buyer beware morel speakers.

Go back in time to early 22 I decided to swap out my speakers and begin my upgrade. Being familiar with kicker, JL and alpine. I wanted something different. I always grouped kicker with entry level and I wanted something more bang for my buck as to say. Called Crutchfield and the advisor said try the morel Maximo 4. That’s should be what I was looking for. Welp man was I wrong.

Around June one blew on a long trip to ocean city. Yay… Crutchfield sent a replacement and I had it waiting for me after vacation. No big deal.

Last month I decided to upgrade the rear morels to the 6.5 pod with focals. So I had 2 extra speakers. Knowing these are junk I kept them just in case and eventually I’ll need to replace again. Shortly after I noticed a slight distortion swapped. Then last week I noticed clicking from the right front morel. Well I got one left Swapped.

Yesterday I noticed the left front with slight distortion. I immediately learned don’t fix what isn’t broken. I have kickers is being delivered Friday.

I could raise a stink and keep swapping which I have. I may have been missing some details here but I think I’ve swapped four speakers out twice. You may ask oh this idiot wired them wrong. I’ve checked and double checked my wiring and it’s correct.Just sharing with others if they want to explore something new….. don’t

Did you install bass blockers on the Morels? If not the 4" coax would have worked extra hard to try to make notes it couldn't have physically reproduced, which would have caused premature wear of the voice coil due to heat. You didn't mention adding amplification, what volume levels did you normally listen at?

Are you running off the head unit or amplified? Morels are great speakers but you need to power them appropriately.

Morels are junk? An underpowered amp speaker combination with amp distorting badly will damage a speaker quicker than overpowering to a degree with clean power. Morels could have an issue. Any speaker can. Bad batch of adhesive. Surround coming unglued. Hard to say what’s going on here.

Distortion kills speakers, not power. Anecdotally, we plugged a 6" speaker into a wall socket for giggles and the thing lasted over 5 minutes. Over 4000w at 60hz and she just kept humming until the voicecoil melted.

Exactly. The head unit is underpowered for those speakers, if you keep pushing for more volume you will get distortion. I am running Morel Maximo 6 speakers with an Audio Control amp. No issues with sound quality.

they have blockers on them so no. I typically listen at 15. Windows down highway speed. The day it killed it I was at 20 no top highway speed. I knew 20 would kill it

No amp.. yet. And when the first one went that’s what I assumed a bad batch. I replaced both. But the rear speakers lasted a lot longer than the front. That’s what made me think user error in the wiring. But it’s not. I find it hard to believe let’s say a stock unit pushing 30 watts per channel would blow a speaker rated for let’s say 50 watts. I don’t get it.

I could see having one bad speaker, but two bad speakers being put in the same box seems unlikely. My opinion only.

Again, only my opinion, but running those same speakers with a quality amp will give you a very different result. If you get new speakers with no amp and they work fine, then maybe you just had bad speakers.

An amplifier maxed out and clipping, producing a lot of distortion is a speaker killer. Have you inspected the speakers for physical damage like separated surround or dust cap?

This... If it's the capacitor that came ON the Morel, that's the high pass for the coax tweeter.

They should have had an additional 600hz high pass added at time of installation.

Based on what we know so far, sounds like an installation error.

I run my Morel speakers at all sorts of levels without issue (5 Maximo 402 Mk II's and 2 Maximo 602 Mk II's) on the factory B&O system. They are pretty damn good for me.

I am getting ready to upgrade the GF's system with a Kicker Key 200.4 and Infinity Reference 4032cfx and 6532ex speakers with a Kicker 46HS10 sub. I expect it to sound better than the B&O but I worry that the Infinity speakers may be a bit bright compared to the Morel Maximo speakers.

Well that really sucks... I think they gave you bad advice. Anything smaller than a 6.5, and even some of those are best with a blocker as long as you have a sub for low end.

I would put them on the front 4" speakers, because they are receiving full range from the head unit.

I would get one that blocks everything below 600hz (specific part# varies based on speaker impedance - for a 4 ohm https://www.crutchfield.com/p_007BB600/Crutchfield-Bass-Blockers-600-Hz-cut-off.html). However, if you're using the factory amp with the factory front wiring where the kick panel and dash speakers are wired in parallel, you're actually turning the dash speakers into 2 ohm speakers. If you are using an amp and the dash speakers are on their own channel you can just set your high-pass filter on the amp to around 600hz. Either way the goal is to block the 4" cone from receiving the lower frequency signals that it can't physically produce.
