Crosstrek is a beast. If they put a better engine in them it would be a great car.

Bronco Sport Badlands has more ground clearance than Base Bronco as well. This has come up before. Ground clearance is obviously important (for wheeling) but it's not the only thing, and 0.3" isn't much. For one thing, "real" Broncos have a more robust suspension than Sport, Subaru or any conventional AWD SUV. This was the first thing I noticed when comparing Bronco Sport with the "real" Bronco. Subaru makes some appealing cars, but not my choice. A conventional inline engine is less complex and easier to work on than Subaru flat engine (and the reason I choose 2.3L over 2.7L). It is my experience with relatives and friends that own Subaru, reliability isn't that great. My nieces Outback needed the power steering system replaced at 90K miles to the tune of $2000, then a month later another $500 for a check engine light. Heck I drove my 85 Merc Cougar 180,000 miles and the only thing I did was exhaust and an engine mount that cost $90.

Anything in the Ford promotional videos are going to be highly curated terrain, so I'm not surprised your experience isn't as glamorous. To be fair, most trails have also been historically maintained for Jeeps, so things tip in their favor. At some point, the wider trucks will be more commonplace, but people don't usually think about just how vehicle specific a lot of trails are. I generally agree with your synopsis, though, the truck is big and bulky and not nearly as capable as Ford would have you think. They are still excellent trucks, but I think Ford is banking on not too many people actually trying to do extreme things with them.

I don't disagree with most of that. But I have had a couple of Subies and no problems.

The lower center of gravity with the boxer engine is no joke. Subarus drive like they are lower than they actually are. Their AWD on snow or in heavy rain is very solid.

I had a 2005 LJ Rubicon that really wasn't much in the rocks either. Thirty inch tires, hangy down transfer case and fuel tank. Thirty twos and a 2 inch lift made it suitable for my purposes.

Having done MOAB and the Rock Gardens in the Trails at Hot Springs Off-Road park.

They rock crawling at MOAB is very different and much easier than lose rock gardens that roll and move with a lot less even terrain.

Based off the trail ratings Hot Springs uses, i wouldn't do anything over a 4 rating with a stock Sasquatch. The 4's were rough with lots of scrapping, but nothing they couldn't handle.

My non-sasquatch OBX on 33's is at 11", and I would suspect that it would be around 12" on 35's.

So with a 1 inch suspension lift, the Bronco would be right there in the ballpark of 12-13".

The money you save getting a Bronco over the Jeep should go into that lift.

There are definitely limitations with IFS in rock crawling. I don’t see many stock Jeeps doing it either. You have to set it up for what you want to do.
Mine did Crawl daddy at Rousch creek and two trips to windrock just fine as a stock Badsquatch. A But we will be going up from here.

Well, I'll tell you my TJ on 39's wouldn't be able to do what was in the video either, and I probably wouldn't even try. That's more in there territory of something that needs (or should) to be trailered to the trailhead which is more of an apples to oranges comparison. For a modern DOT approved vehicle it's quite capable in the rocks, although to be fair I bought it more for the high speed aspect, and leave the old TJ to get smashed up in the rocks.

We all know this but some of us may be more stubborn and unwilling to fully admit it.

I went out again last weekend and tried to hammer a square peg in a round hole again and it just isn't working. It's not the IFS that's the problem, is the ground clearance. Everybody else on that trail with similar size tires had no issues because they had far more belly height.

Any mods done to overcome this shortcoming will take away what makes the Bronco so good at everything else. I'm done trying, I'm leaving it stockish from here out and going to build a toy for the rocks.
